Can you tell me what has gone wrong and how I can get the site back up – I’m getting complaints. Grateful for your advice – I just don’t know why this has happened – there was no problem in drawing the funds for the annual domain name fee

Yes, you need to renew the domain mapping. Your domain registration is separate from this and both are required to keep the site up and working.
Once the mapping is added to your account the domain will show your WordPress.com site again.
First, you’ll need to pick out which plan you want. Those are listed here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
After you pay and have added the plan to your account you will click on My Sites – Domains – Add and map the domain.
