  do I need a site icon? If so, how long does it take to change it?

  Hi!

  Yes, a site icon is recommend. As mentioned on this documentation https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-icons/, “It is shown across WordPress.com, in your visitor’s browser tab, in widgets like Blogs I Follow, and as a bookmark or home screen app icon when saved to a browser or phone.”

  When you upload a site icon, it should ideally reflect across immediately.
