Site inaccessible after domain name upgrade

  • Unknown's avatar

I upgraded to a custom domain and now my site is no longer reachable. I can’t edit the domain contacts, enable private registration, or do anything else. Everything I select fails with “Oops there was a problem with your request. Please visit support forums.” I am very close to cancelling. When I do the DNS health check it says my DNS name is not registered and that it is expired even though the expiration date is one year from a few days ago. Can someone please help me?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,
Looks like your domain was not purchased and there was an error. You might have to purchase the domain again. I have marked this for a staff to look into. Please be patient until a staff gets in touch with you.

The order of events was that I purchased the premium hosting package that includes a free domain registration, clicked on “Add Free Domain” link in the confirmation email, registered the domain, and selected Private registration. The domain name appeared under my domain list and I set it as the primary domain. Over the past two days I tried to visit it several times and it did not work. That’s when I ran the DNS health check which failed with error DNS is not registered. I ran through the free registration process again. It said the domain name was available untilt he final confirmation step with failed with the error that the domain name is already registered to another wordpress blog. (Which I believe to be my own.) I hope this additional information helps.

    Hi there!

@simplysaru is correct. It looks like your domain did not register correctly. I’ve removed those subscriptions and restored the domain credit to your account. Please try to register your domain again here:

Shawna I tried to register the same address again, waited 10 minutes, and it is still not working. Can someone walk me through this via email, chat, or otherwise? Thanks for looking into this.

It can take up to an hour for a domain to fully register. I’ll write myself a reminder to pop back around to your domain’s status page in about an hour and we’ll see if it went through. :)

Okay thanks so much. Some additional info:
    1. On this page: https://wordpress.com/my-upgrades/ there is a huge red box that reads “DNS needs to be updated.” If I click on Cancel this upgrade, I gett he error “You cannot cancel this domain because it was not registered with WordPress.com. Please contact support.”
    2. On this page: https://wordpress.com/domains/register/ if I enter the domain name and choose “Register now” it says congratulations the name is available, but after I fill in the contact form it fails with the error “The domain name you entered is already mapped to a WordPress.com blog.”

Yep! These are expected right now.

The first means that your DNS settings haven’t been updated. This step can take a few hours (and on the bad side up to three days) to fully happen. Every new domain registration will see this for a little while.

The second happens because we’re doing two different kinds of checks. The initial search box searches all available domains. And, since your registration hasn’t gone through, sees it as available. Then when you see the error, its because we’re searching WordPress.com for duplicate subscriptions.

Hopefully our registrar is just lagging a little and your registration will go through shortly! If not, I’ll ping our store folks about getting this fixed up for you.

    Hi @shawnajroberts

It’s been two days and its still not working. Can you please escalate?

It still says DNS needs to be updated. Nothing has changed. This is the 2nd time I’ve waited two days. 8(

    Thanks

I’m so sorry this still hasn’t gone through. I just got word that another registration blip was cleared up shortly after our last correspondence. Can I ask you to please go through the registration process one more time?

I’ve also given you a partial refund on your purchase since this has been no where near as easy as its supposed to be.

  • @shawna
Here is another user with a similar issue. Please look into it.
