Site is text only, why?
-
I completed my site http://www.simple-nutrition.com, but it comes up as a text only site. On my computer (firefox or safari), it looks great. I’m new to wordpress so I’m sure its something simple I needed to adjust.
Help?

Hi! As the supportbot mentions your site is a self-hosted installation of WordPress.org. You’ll need to check in those forums for help.

Well, I’m looking at wordpress.com right now, and posting on a text only forum, reading text only blogs, and navigating a text only wordpress home page.
The same thing was happening the other day as well, but resolved after a short while and a few refreshes. But not this time.
It’s not me, the rest of the internet is fine.
Mac osx 10.5.8 + firefox 3.6.13
It might be limited to my combination of settings.
My guess, something is askew with the CSS. Maybe in the script for how it is applied.

So far I’ve tried:
Mac OSX 10.5.8 firefox 3.6.13
Mac OSX 10.5.8 firefox 3.6.12
Mac OSX 10.5.8 safari 5.02
Windows XP firefox 3.5.3
Windows XP ie8All results are the same. And not just the wordpress.com homepage but also wordpress.org, all blogs, forums, the lot.
christmas snow can be seen on the homepage, also the nav bar at the top, but sometimes it has difficulty functioning and displaying correctly.

What was in that latest 3.04 wordpress.org update released the other day? I’m assuming that wordpress.com uses a wordpress.org engine?
except jenhord’s site uses 3.04 and looks fine to me (except localhost url references) so now I’m stumped.
It must just be me.

timethief… should I start a new thread titled “WordPress.COM and wordpress.ORG both look like crap without a CSS stylesheet”?
-
ok, I give up. It must just be me and my browser(S) not being able to view wordpress.COM (or wordpress.ORG) the way it was intended.
-
I repeat the blog you are posting about is NOT a free blog being free hosted by wordpress.COM. We cannot help you here at wordpress.com with that blog.

I AM -NOT- THE ORIGINAL POSTER.
My blog -IS- a free blog hosted on wordpress.com, it is however private.
God, I really hope I am not arguing with a bot.
I posted here because it was a similar issue to mine.
-
@mandi, I’m having no problems in Safari, Firefox, Opera, Flock, SeaMonkey or Chrome, so this might be an issue with an invisible proxy server at your ISP, or perhaps some issue on the internet between you and the wordpress servers. Why would the proxy server not affect all site? Firewall settings, virus software settings, etc., on the proxy server. We had similar issues a while ago when one particular firewall software was blocking one particular wordpress.COM URL at the datacenter.
I’m on OS X 10.6.5.
Here is a partial screen cap from the blog that Timethief references: http://flippintestblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/mandi.png , and the main wordpress.COM pages and forum pages all are fully styled for me.
This isn’t a wordpress issue otherwise the forums would right now be absolutely flooded with threads complaining of this.
Do you have any sort of third-party firewall you are behind? Are you at home or at work when this issues occurs? Have you tried going to a wi-fi hotspot somewhere that is on a different ISP than you are and checking to see if it works from there (after clearing your browser cache and cookies to make sure it doesn’t pull from the cache)?
-
If the site timethief referenced is not yours, then ignore that part of my response above.

@m4ndi
I apologize for not noticing that you were not the original poster to this thread. :( You do need to post the URL for the blog in question whether or not the blog is private. Staff have backend access to blogs but Volunteers do not and you suspect there is a CSS error. Do you have the CSS upgrade or not? -
@m4ndi One other thing to check is the following 3 URLs:
http://s0.wp.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css?m=1249392855g&3
http://s1.wp.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css?m=1249392855g&3
http://s2.wp.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css?m=1249392855g&3Those should all load text. If any of those are blocked then there is an issue between your internet connection and the stylesheets on WordPress.com. This could cause the appearance to be all text.
Do all of those links load for you? Are any of them blocked?

Thankyou thesacredpath,
I’m at home, and I usually blog post from home, however in the last few days my wordpress blog and login screen has been text only, seemingly a removal of CSS.
I decided to check around, the whole site (the site being wordpress.com) is the way I show in the image I stashed on postimage.org.
I am behind a firewall, I use NAT to access programs requiring extra ports. If wordpress needs extra ports to connect then I may as well switch to another blog hoster, but I severely doubt that because as you say, more people would be up in arms about it.
I’m not running a proxy, nor connecting to an online proxy.
Also, as a side note, I don’t see what’s so bad with opening up jenhord’s site, looking at the code and just telling him that the reason he doesn’t see images is because he’s using localhost as an absolute url reference. But I get that the two sites and their support forums need to be kept separate. In my case however, both sites are affected, except jenhord’s.
I cleared the cache. That was one of the first things I tried. If it’s cross brower, local browser only cache clearing won’t do jack. My router doesn’t have a cache.
When I just tried my dongle everything worked how it used to a few days ago. So that means it is limited to me. And the problem exists between my laptop and the ISP.
Why would my ISP block wordpress’s CSS files? Unless… ISP’s would have huge caches, maybe they have old CSS files, and when the upgrade to 3.04 occurred some of the CSS changed and the ISP didn’t notice and keeps dishing up the old CSS. Because I’ve often found CSS lagging behind and continuing to be cached even when I’ve changed the files on the server.
Would that be a likely theory?
andrew,
The last one s2 works, it shows a stylesheet, the others fail. I’m trying to telnet now to find out exact error codes, but in firefox it just says “connection reset”
-
The proxy server I was referring to are invisible. They are used by ISP’s to reduce their bandwidth expenses. When everything is working well, then you never know there there (invisible).
I’ll let Andrew take the issue with your firewall blocking wordpress.
-
Andrew, ok, I’ve had a fiddle, it seems I can connect to each of the virtual servers and download the CSS -but- the telnet connection is refused intermittently for each. I confirmed this in firefox with a simple mass refresh on all of the links. All of them would work occasionally. This can’t be a cache problem with a transparent ISP proxy, I would think. If it was it would happen -all- the time. Probably a connection issue with my ISP.
I hate intermittent problems, they’re the hardest to figure out. And on New Years? I reckon if it’s still dodgy in a week, I might repost in my own thread, rather than hijacking an existing similar sounding thread.
Still, very weird though.
Happy New Years everybody.

Check in your firewall preferences or configuration and see if you can “whitelist” the three URLs that Andrew referenced.
