Site Logo resize Custom CSS??
-
Hi Guys, I’m currently drafting a proposal event website for a music venue i work for. Love the harmonic theme but have hit the wall with a few things and wondered if somebody can help me with a work-around?
First issue is with the Site Logo size on the front page.
Im using the scrolling front page template and have seen in a recent post that the only way to change the logo size is with custom CSS.Have just upgraded my bundle in order to do this but am newbie to coding such as this and was wondering if anyone could help me out with some code to use for this?
Ideally i’d like the logo to show in the top menu where the ‘Site Title’ currently appears…if that’s a possibility i’d also love to know how!
The other issue relates back to the ‘Logo’ issue in that for some reason i can’t seem to upload the logo as a vector?? Have tried versions of the image as .eps but wordpress doesn’t seem to like it. Whenever i use a PNG or JPG however there is a background on the logo that shows against my chosen front page backdrop :/
How would one go about setting the logo as a vector such as in the themes demo page?
Any wisdom you can depart would be greatly appreciated!
Am working from a MacBookPro 10.9.3 and my site is at

Many thanks, Oli

You need to upload an image file and an .eps file is not an image it’s a postscript file for use with something like Photoshop or Illustrator. It sounds like you mean you want to save it with a transparent background – check out the .png file format for this. It should be a pretty simple thing to achieve with most moderately advanced image editing software.
Here’s how to replace the site title link with an image using CSS, just adjust the URL to the image and the dimensions as appropriate:
.site-title a { display:block; background:url("http://placehold.it/300x50") no-repeat left top; width:300px; height:50px; text-indent:100%; white-space:nowrap; overflow:hidden; }I tested it in the theme demo as your site is set to private.
-
Yep that’s exactly what i’m after! Managed to create a ‘transparent’ background quite easily in Preview and the code worked great. Yes sorry just realised, am keeping as private until have had the designs signed off. Hopefully will be able to get content up much sooner now.
So with CSS such as this, is it theme specific? If there’s anywhere you know with a list of useful ‘global’ (or at least quite widespread) CSS scripts for theme customisation would really appreciate it!
and keep me from pestering you too much :-)

Although there can be some similarities in the CSS on WordPress.com themes, for the most part CSS is theme specific. Each theme designer decides what they are going to name the CSS selectors. There really isn’t any global list, or even anything “quite widespread”.
If you are not yet familiar with the web inspector tool in your browser, take a look at our support document on How to Find Your Theme’s CSS, which has some brief screencasts to get you started using it. It makes working with CSS much easier.

Ah great, thank you for the direction. The links have really helped me work around a few issues.
I’m using the harmonic theme through wordpress.COM and have hit a point where I think I may have to start tweaking the functions.php to progress any further. However I can’t seem to find my file directory under dashboard > appearance > editor or access the theme’s style sheets/functions files through my mac’s FTP
As the site is not yet self hosted is it even possible for me to edit this?
Or would i need to upgrade my account and host the site directly, create a child theme etc.I’ve read a few posts that imply that you would need to contact the developers in order to go down this road..
Thanks again for your help!

At WordPress.com, we cannot edit the theme files since this is a multi-user environment where we all share the same theme and WordPress core files, and any change by one would change it for all using that theme.
On self-hosted WordPress installations using the software from WordPress.org, you can edit anything you want.
The Harmonic theme was written in-house right here at WordPress.com. Once a theme is released, there are seldom any major design changes made since a design change could really irritate someone who liked the theme just he way it was.
If you self-host a WordPress installation, you can change anything you want to on the theme, but Harmonic has not yet been released for self-hosted sites, and I don’t know when that will happen.

Right okay, that seems sensible. I don’t really need to make any major design changes, just add text + info to the backgrounds on harmonic’s scrolling front page option but I guess i can get around that by editing text onto the actual Jpgs themselves.
I understand the themes have a lot of work going into them and are being constantly updated, i’ve only had experience with 4 or so themes so far but it does seem a shame that visual customisation options are so limited in the ‘customise’ window for those of us who aren’t proficient in CSS/HTML coding. Especially as Harmonic is such a good looking theme.
Just re: your point above i’m assuming if this is the case I won’t be able to install any 3rd party Plugins? if as you say, at the moment Harmonic isn’t available for self-hosting…(although that being said I have just noticed a “Download Harmonic for your self-hosted WordPress site” link at https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/harmonic/
Is that a bit of false hope or has self-hosting now been released?
It may turn out I am using completely the wrong theme for the functionality we need but Events Calendar Pro and WooCommerce were 2 plugins I was relying on being able to install.
Seems there is nothing on the Harmonic theme info page that clearly says the theme cannot be self-hosted and also does not support 3rd party plugins.
I realise it doesn’t mention these in the “Harmonic also supports the following features:” section but I admit I assumed if a Wpress site was self-hosted this was always a supported functionality. Thanks

Ah, that is good. It wasn’t there yesterday when I looked.
On plugins, no, they cannot be installed here, however, with the WordPress.com Business Plan, you do have a number of e-commerce solutions available to use, including WooCommerce.
We also have an Upcoming Events Widget, which can connect to an iCalendar (Google Calendar) which you may wish to check out.
From our Code Support Page:
WordPress.com is a type of shared environment, where all users are running off of the same software. This is great because it allows us at Automattic to update millions of blogs at the same time with a single click. It means we can fix bugs or offer new features very quickly, which is a win for you as users. Having all users running on the same software can also be dangerous. If we aren’t careful, one user has the potential to take down the entire site. So this is why we need to limit some of the things you post on your blog.
It may turn out that a self-hosted WordPress.org installation would be a better fit for you. The good news is that all of your content you have put on your site here can be exported from here and imported into the new self-hosted installation quite easily.
