Site Migration

    Hello,

I have a custom-coded site that I want to move to WordPress Pro (domain and hosting). I have the XML site map file. How do I import it into my new WordPress site?

    Thank-you,

    Kimberly

  • Hi Kimberly,

If the site is custom-coded, the only way to migrate the content is to manually copy-paste each page individually into new posts and pages on your WordPress.com site. We have an overview of the basic process here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/import/converting-an-html-site-to-wordpress/

A sitemap is really just a list of pages that exist on the site, and is there to help search engines more effectively index your site. A sitemap doesn’t contain any of the actual content, so it can’t be used to import your content to another site/platform.

A manually-created XML file also can’t be imported, as the file’s content itself needs to be created in a specific format, called WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) for the importer to be able to correctly parse and import the content. Sitemaps, while also XML files, use a completely different format.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
