I want my site name to be different than my username. It was not pointed out when I created my account that the username would be used for the site name.

Hi there,
I’m assuming you refer to your site’s address, checkers36.wordpress.com. You have three options to have that different from your username:
1) Create a second site in your account with a different address. Just go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ to do that.
2) You can change your free address to a different one. Note that will delete the current address, and you won’t be able to use it again in future.

3) You can add a custom domain to your site, replacing the free address, using any of our paid plans:

It’s also worth mentioning that your site’s name/title has nothing to do with the address. Initially it’s set the same, but you can change the site title that appears at the top from Settings ->General to be whatever you want.
You can also set a public display name in place of your username, that can be whatever you want. You do that on the profile page at https://wordpress.com/me/
