Site name and domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

Created a blog name, trying to use my name purchased at another registrar nanas-angels.org but wordpress changed the name to ” nanasangelsdotorg.wordpress.com”
I paid $13 to map my domain to my account (nanas-angels.org) and then selected it to made it my primary domain.
Then I deleted the wordpress name, thinking I didn’t need it anymore, and I couldn’t get rid of that address showing up. But when I deleted it, then I lost my primary domain and lost the $13. Tried re-creating it and was assigned the new URL nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com.

I don’t know how in the heck to use wordpress, and have my domain URL show up. I try to enter it but it says domain name is already used (which of course is me).

All I want is to end up with my site URL http://www.nanas-angels.org. How do I do it and do I have to pay the $13 again?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

When you sign-up for a blog at WordPress.com, you’re automatically assigned a default blog URL (like nanasangelsdotorg.wordpress.com). Even if you map a custom domain to your blog, you’ll still see nanasangelsdotorg.wordpress.com on the admin side (readers will see your custom domain). The .wordpress.com address is just used to identify your blog at WordPress.com, and it can’t be deleted.

I went ahead and moved the domain mapping upgrade over to your current blog nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com since the other address was deleted. You should now see the custom domain when you load either of the following:

    http://nanas-angels.org

    http://nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com

Readers will only see the former, but you’ll still see the latter when you’re editing posts and doing other admin tasks.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thank you! I’m sorry I’m so clueless!

If I change my my primary blog address from nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com by selecting another one created (txmommylady.wordpress.com), is the mapping still there, or does it apply only to the former? I think that may be a dumb question but would like to double-check.

Or, if I later CHANGE the site address, will the mapping change over or will I have to do it again?

Since I purchased the domains for .org .com and .net, what I did was map the .org and change the name servers and the registrar as directed to the wordpress name servers.

Then I forwarded the .com and .net URLs to the .org (mapped to my blog). Is this an okay way to do this?

I think this will clear up my confusion.

    Hi!

The custom domain (nanas-angels.org in this case) will replace the default blog address (txmommylady.wordpress.com for instance) on any blog it’s assigned to.

The upgrade is blog specific so if you had the upgrade on nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com, you would see the custom domain instead of the default .wordpress.com domain. Alternatively, you could transfer the upgrade to your other blog txmommylady.wordpress.com to replace that site address. The same single domain mapping upgrade can’t mask two site addresses. Does that make sense?

What we need to do is decide what WordPress.com address you want to use as your default blog address (nanasangelsdotorg1.wordpress.com or txmommylady.wordpress.com). Then, we can setup the domain mapping on that particular blog.

Or, if I later CHANGE the site address, will the mapping change over or will I have to do it again?

Changing the site address is a bit different. Basically, when you change a site address (say txmommylady.wordpress.com to txmommyladies.wordpress.com), the blog is actually still the same. You just slapped a fresh coat of paint on it and renamed it. In that case, all the blog properties (theme, upgrades, content, etc) will not change.

The alternative is setting up a new blog (separate address). That new blog would have a separate set of upgrades, themes, content, etc.

Since I purchased the domains for .org .com and .net, what I did was map the .org and change the name servers and the registrar as directed to the wordpress name servers.
Then I forwarded the .com and .net URLs to the .org (mapped to my blog). Is this an okay way to do this?

So, just to clarify, you purchased the following:

    nanas-angels.com

    nanas-angels.org

    nanas-angels.net

You mapped one (nanas-angels.org) to your site and then just redirected the others to nanas-angels.org. Is that correct?

That would definitely work. In terms of search engine optimization, it might not be the 100% best way. The absolute best method would be to map each domain separately to your WordPress.com site and then set a primary domain so that all other domains redirect to one domain at WordPress.com. The difference is that all domains now are associated with a blog and content rather than just being a blind redirect. However, with that being said, the way you described having set it up likely isn’t too terrible.

Thank you for explaining again! I would like for the upgrade to go to txmommylady which I also want to be my default blog address.

    Hi!

Perfect – I’ve moved the domain upgrade for nanas-angels.org over to txmommylady.wordpress.com. You can set txmommylady.wordpress.com as your default blog address following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#primary-blog

Please let me know if you have any trouble!
