Site name reserved

Hello WordPress – hope you’re good
I’m changing my writing name from a moniker to my real name:
haddan –> ben jacobsand so i’m trying to change my blog name from
haadanuk.wordpress –> benjacobsuk.wordpressHowever, it says that benjacobsuk is reserved.
It’s possible that this has something to do with me also having had the benjacobsuk username, which I’d also like to have for this blog!
Could you help at all? I’d really like to have everything under Ben Jacobs now.
ALL my best
BenThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When you register a username, that the blog url of the same name is reserved for use only by that username. You’ll have to register the blog using the original username.
Once you’ve registered the blog, you could follow the directions at the following article to transfer it to the username you prefer to use:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account
-
it’s slightly more complicated than that, because i had the
benjacobsuk
username before and changed it to
londonshortstoriesnow i can’t change it back, OR set up a new blog with benjacobsuk as the username, as it says that that username already exists.
Feels like WordPress needs to reset the benjacobsuk username/ url??
-
Ah, the issue here is that once a username is used, it can never be used again (even by you) in order to prevent impersonation.
I’ve flagged this thread for Staff assistance to see if there’s anything they can do for you. Please subscribe to this thread if you haven’t already, and be patient while waiting for a staff member to assist you.
-
Ah, I knew that I would not be allowed to change back to the former username on that account, but I didn’t realise that would make it inactive forever!
Thanks for your help mate
Hopefully something can be worked out – i like wordpress’ usability, but the url name’s very important going forward

Well, you could always register a domain name that is similar to what you want, and use domain mapping. Several variations of benjacobsuk.*** are available to register.
-
Hi Ben – when you change a username, it deletes the old one and it can’t be used again. But as Andy pointed out, you can map a domain, such as benjacobsuk.com.
You can use a similar underlying URL, such as benjacobsukblog.wordpress.com. Hope this helps! :)

Hey Eurello
How comes WordPress is still registering me as benjacobsuk then?
http://www.imagevat.com/picview.php?ig=37323
Where does the username go?
-
-
Hi Ben – that’s showing your display name, which you can edit to be whatever you want:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/#change-display-name-nicknameBut the display name is different from the actual username.
-
And is there absolute no way to have anything on
http://www.benjacobsuk.wordpress.com
ever again?
I also see that the user Ben Jacobs has not used the website http://www.benjacobs.wordpress.com
Is there any way of contacting this user? -
Hi Ben – I’m sorry, but those can’t be used. You can choose a similar free URL, or again, you can map any domain you like.
-
ok, so now i’ve got a new, second-choice username, and I’ve transferred my blog over to it, but i can’t seem to put the transferred blog under the .wordpress of the username, benjacobswriter??
Why is this so complicated??
today I’ve managed to change the usernames/ titles/ e-mails/ urls of my Facebook account, SoundCloud account and my Twitter account with absolutely no problem. And spent hours on WordPress…getting nowhere
-
Keep in mind, changing your username on WordPress.com doesn’t change your blog address (but the blog address of the same name is reserved just for that username.
To change the your blog’s address, you need to go to My Blogs in your dashboard, then under the blog you want to change, click “Change Blog Address.”
-
I want to transfer the material from http://www.haddanuk.wordpress.com –> http://www.benjacobswriter.wordpress.com
What’s the best way i can do that?
-
Safest is to Export / Import
If you already own the blog, please follow these steps:
Log into the old blog, go to Tools → Export, (http://support.wordpress.com/export/ ) and download the XML (WXR) file to your computer.
In the new blog, go to Tools → Import → WordPress, ( http://support.wordpress.com/import/ ) and upload the file you downloaded in step 1. After you upload the file, you can choose the option to Download & import file attachments if you want to move your media files.
Leave the old site up – a couple of options – buy the Site redirect upgrade to send traffic to new site – $ 13.– for one year – that will also tell search engines that you have moved
Leave a note with a link on the old site that you have moved just in case –
You don’t need the site redirect but if you have had the old site for a while it will help direct traffic to the new site – if you don’t use the site redirect then set the old site content to “Private” so search engines will not see duplicate content
no matter what method is used there will be a bit of traffic drop from search engines as they get used to the new address
-
Usually you recover from the change in terms of traffic within four months.
This is EXACTLY why I don’t recommend the “change username” option. Mind you, I’ve no idea how many people change it and never want to go back.
-
Hi Ben,
I see that you were able to get your site set up at your new address here: http://benjacobswriter.wordpress.com/
If you have any other questions or concerns about this switch, please let us know!
