Site no longer accessible (Error: ‘This site can’t be reached’)

    Issue:
    1. when attempting to access robertbraceauthor.com via Chrome, receiving this error: ‘This site can’t be reached’
    2. when attempting to access via WordPress/My Site/WP Admin, same error: ‘This site can’t be reached’

Background: the website was confirmed working correctly all last week, although email forwarding was not (and never) worked. On Thursday, I attempted to resolve this by changing the DNS servers in accordance with the instructions at ‘https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/email-forwarding/’. I saw no change (i.e., website still working fine; email forwarding still not working) but this was expected as DNS changes take hours or even days to propagate.

Apparently the change has now propagated, but the result is that the website is no longer accessible. Can you please advise how to best diagnose & resolve the issue?

The host is Bluehost. The DNS servers were changed to:
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com
I checked Bluehost, and the change seems to have taken effect correctly

The site I need help with is [visible only to staff] (email visible only to moderators and staff). It is not hosted by WordPress.com, but it is connected with Jetpack.

  • Hi,

So, if your domain is not hosted with WordPress.com, you wouldn’t want to have WordPress.com nameservers (except perhaps in some rare situations).

If you are hosted with Bluehost, you would want to have Bluehost nameservers.

WordPress directs you to change the Bluehost named servers as per this link:
    https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/email-forwarding/
    which then links here:

Those instructions are for sites hosted here at WordPress.com.

As my colleague stated, your site is not hosted at WordPress.com but is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with Bluehost.

You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

You can also reach out to your host for help with this. Since they’re hosting your site’s files, they also have access to those files and could also be able to help you here. https://www.bluehost.com/contact

Of note, Bluehost nameservers can be found here: https://www.bluehost.com/help/article/our-name-servers-ns

    I hope that clarifies things!
