Site Not Loading – Technical Issue – NO Recovery Email

  • Unknown's avatar

I received an email stating my theme had a technical error and used the recovery email to access the dashboard to troubleshoot. I’m not a pro, so thought if I role back the wordpress version, it would allow my theme to work again, however now I don’t even receive the recovery email, so I have no way to access the dashboard. Is there anything I can do to change it back to the latest wordpress version, so the recovery email is reinstated so I can continue troubleshooting? Thank you

    Hi there:

You’ve posted to the free support forums for websites hosted here at WordPress.com. Since your site is not hosted with us, we’re limited in what we can help with and advise. But I can get you pointed in the right direction to get help.

A technical error likely indicates a problem with a plugin or theme in your installation. If you’re not sure how to access your site via FTP to troubleshoot this, I would recommend you reach out to your host for help with this. Since they’re hosting your site’s files, they also have access to those files and are the best ones to help you find and fix this problem.

If you still have trouble, please reach out to the WordPress community for guidance:

    I hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the response. The theme plugin was the issue, the theme was bought and I don’t wish to renew the subscription, so if I could just get back into the recovery dashboard, I would change to a free theme – backend aside, is there any way for the wordpress version I was on to be reinstated to the latest version, so I receive the recovery email again? Much appreciate your time.

  • Without having hosting platform access to your site that isn’t something we can really answer for you unfortunately; however if you still need to change themes while not having access to the WP Admin backend, then you could theoretically change which is the active theme via your site’s database in phpMyAdmin. It’s worth checking with your host if you can do that, or perhaps if they can do that for you:

With a different theme active then theoretically you can get back into your site! Otherwise, try adding /wp-login.php?action=entered_recovery_mode to the end of your domain name and see if that lets you get in using recovery mode too.

That said, your hosting provider and/or the WordPress.org forums would be better resources for help regarding this than we can be!
