Site not responsive
-
Hi,
I’m using a responsive layout theme. But the website isn’t adjusting itself on my Android mobile or iPhone. It also fails Google’s mobile test.
Any advice appreciated!
The website is https://newquaywalks.wordpress.com/
I’m currently using the theme Sequential. Before I used Illustratr
Same issue with both saying they are responsive but not being so.
I have the ‘make mobile’ option for the theme switched OFF. I tried it ON and it didn’t help.
Any advice appreciated! Thanks

Hi Steve –
Happy to have a deeper look at this. Are you able to grab some screen shots of how the site appears for you on those mobile devices? Go ahead and add those to your media library and let me know once they are there -then I can take a look.
What browser and version are you using on mobile?

Hi Liz,
Sorry for the delay. OK, I’ve placed grabs of both mobile phones in the media library.
iPhone – Safari: 11.4.1 (15G77)
Android – Samsung Internet 6.4.10.5
(I’ve since updated to 7.2.10.33 – and the website looks the same)
Any insights appreciated.
Thanks Liz!

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the screenshots, do you have any settings set on the device that could be preventing the width from displaying correctly? For example, some browsers will allow the mode to be set as “Desktop View” which could be causing what you’re seeing.
Here’s what I see with Andriod 7.2.1:
I’ve also run the site through Google’s Mobile Friendly test and got the result of “This page is Mobile Friendly”

Hi, thanks for your help.
This is a mystery – I’ve just done the same Google mobile test (on my PC) and it says not mobile friendly …

NB: Other WordPress sites I’ve made from a year ago are fine on both mobile phones.
Any ideas?
Thanks

BTW, I’m based in the UK. Not sure if that’s a reason for pages to configure differently across devices (post GDPR/consent pop-ups, etc).

The website is https://newquaywalks.wordpress.com/
Hi there,
The WordPress site above is responsive, the issue is that http://newquaywalks.co.uk/ loads the site in an iframe (as shown in your screenshot).
The site will not be responsive if it’s loaded in an iframe.
If you’d like the site to appear correctly at newquaywalks.co.uk, domain mapping would be required:

Hi Gary,
Ahh, OK that starts to make sense.
However, I’ve got another WordPress site that doesn’t have domain mapping but reshapes perfectly for mobiles:
https://servicecentregarage.wordpress.com/
That was set up about a year ago.
So I’m wondering if the iframe issue you mention is something that’s been added into WordPress during the past year?
ie. before it wasn’t an issue, now it is.
Does that make sense?
I suppose it would be a good way to ‘encourage’ people to purchase domain mapping!
Thanks again

However, I’ve got another WordPress site that doesn’t have domain mapping but reshapes perfectly for mobiles:
https://servicecentregarage.wordpress.com/The site at that URL isn’t being loaded in an iframe – it’s the use of iframes that causes the problem.
So I’m wondering if the iframe issue you mention is something that’s been added into WordPress during the past year?
No, it’s not WordPress specific. The same thing happens when attempting to load non-WordPress sites inside iframes too.
Thanks again
You’re welcome, glad I could help :)

Thanks Gary. Sorry, I’m a bit confused.
What is causing the website to be loaded into an iframe?
Is it the case with:
a) Just some WordPress.com themes (so if I choose a different theme it’ll be OK)?
b) All WordPress.com themes do this today so domain mapping is the only fix?
Thanks

A html page has been created at http://newquaywalks.co.uk/ that contains an iframe.
That iframe loads then loads the WordPress.com site.
The theme being used does not make a difference.
The problem is using an iframe to load one site (newquaywalks.wordpress.com) inside another (newquaywalks.co.uk) – it prevents the site resizing on different screens.
Again, this is not a WordPress specific issue. The same problem would occur if you tried to load any site (including non-WordPress sites) inside an iframe.
The correct method for having a site appear at a custom domain name is to use domain mapping – not an iframe:

Yay thanks @garysixtyeight!!
Steve,
If you’d like to use the custom domain, newquaywalks.co.uk with your WordPress.com site you may do so by adding one of our plans.
This will allow you to properly map the domain on our end. In addition to making the site responsive at the custom domain, it’ll add a free SSL certificate (allowing the site to be showing over https) which can help with search rankings.
Once you buy a plan you’ll need to turn off domain masking (or forwarding) at fasthost.uk and then add the name servers. If you need additional help just let us know.
