Site Not Sizing For 4:3 Computers

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I have a couple issues that I need help with. My website (http://thehopry.com/) looks great on my computer (16:9 monitor), but others who have smaller 4:3 monitors or laptops complain that it looks horrible. I have included two screenshots to show the difference. Would really like some help understanding what is going wrong…

What it looks like on MY computer.

What it looks like on OTHERS computers.

    The two issues:
Video does not resize for other computers.
Images in the center of page do not resize either.

    Thanks…
    Mark

That is because you are using a flexible width theme and the minimum width for the theme is wider than the available screen width.

I would suggest switching to a narrower theme such as Mistylook or pretty much any of the older themes here. Most of the new ones are wider (for 1024 wide resolution). It looks as though that old monitor is probably set at 800px wide, or possibly lower. Also, go to a theme with only one sidebar. That will give more room for your main content.

And actually, you are inserting your youtube videos too wide. That is more of the problem than anything really.

I would not insert any youtubes wider than 450px since the minimum width on the content area with the theme you are using is about 460px.

You also need to cut down on the number of posts you have showing on the main page. It takes forever to load on my wireless internet connection and with the short level of patience people on the internet have, most will simply click away from your site rather than wait for a minute or more for it to load. Do your viewers a favor and cut down to say 5 at settings > reading.

Is there a way to just narrow the main column and then size the videos to match that or am I stuck with the huge width that’s provided?

You can open the posts in the post editor, switch to the HTML tab and then specify a width as described under additional options in this support document. Note, specify only the width and then wordpress will automatically retain the proportions.

I think I may have asked the question wrong. I know how to adjust the height and width of the YouTube video itself. What I’m asking is if there is a way to make the width of the actual content area (where the text is being placed) more narrow? That would allow me to correct a lot of this without losing the three columns which I desperately want. Is there something in the actual coding that could be reduced (number-wise) to make this more narrow?

Well, yes you can make the content area narrower, but that means you will have to make your videos even narrower since they would again hang over the sidebars. With flexible width themes, the width of content area is typically defined by a percentage of the page or container in the CSS so it is the one that gets narrow and wider with browser windows. There is typically also a “minimum” width set for the “page” or “container in the CSS as well.

Bottom line is you would have to have a good knowledge of CSS and then buy the CSS upgrade.

And, remember that if you set a minimum width such that your main content column is only 250px wide, then your videos are going to have to be inserted at that width, 250px.

Okay, well thank you for all your input. I think I have fixed it for the most part. Those who view my site with very old 4:3 computers or smaller monitors may have some overlap, but I’ve looked at the site on several computers now and I think I’m happy with where it’s landed. Will close this topic…

You know, there is a fixed width 3-column theme here, Dark Wood, that has a custom background option (color or image) that you might want to check out. It is fixed at 1000px wide, which if someone is on an old monitor with 800 x 600 resolution, the sidebars will be cut off, but the main column would always be the same width so there wouldn’t be any issues with the videos overlapping the sidebars.

I just wish there was a way to make the flexible columns unflexible. Because otherwise I’m really happy with the layout.
