site not working after mapping upgrade
-
Hi, Please help. I am starting a new thread as my problem has evolved. After not receiving a response from Support regarding my previous queries re: mapping and mx settings etc etc I finally managed to get the answers I needed and what I was doing wrong ( ironically from a Google Forum ). Since then, my DNS has been updated, WP has recognized this as they allowed me to purchase domain mapping upgrade. But since then my blog url (bbt108.wordpress.com) and my domain url (bbtafrica.co.za) have been unavailable. I get the following error: Unable to determine IP address from host name for bbtafrica.co.za The dnsserver returned: No DNS records …
Initially I thought it was as suggested in the forums that dns settings take upto 72 hours to propogate. But it has been over a week. The DNS settings were done about 10 days ago, and 1 further change was made about 8 days ago. Since then I was able to access my site for about 1 or 2 minutes and then its offline again. The history on this is that my site used to be on google sites. I had an A record for www pointing to google. I then changed this to point to the NS1 ip address. I am not sure what else to do and I am not getting any responses from staff. ( maybe they are tired of me now). I have emailed about 5 times with no response. Is anyone able to assist. Either there is something wrong on WP side or I have stuffed up something… any ideas? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I have flagged this thread for Staff attention. Please be patient while waiting for them to answer you.
-
@timethief – thanks. I am trying to be patient, but to be offline for over 1 week is very difficult… but I will try.

I tried to do a whois on bbtafrica.co.za and got back strange results – looks like some sort of error – is your domain registration current? One of the returns looks like it might have expired, but it was on a screen that I had never seen before.
-
@auxclass – yes, the registration is current. All was working fine until I did the upgrade. My google site was operational right till the end. about the whois lookup, I cant figure that one out as the ns was updated. when i did a search here i got the wordpress NS, though it does seem to bounce a bit until it finds the result. http://www.dnswatch.info/dns/dnslookup?host=bbtafrica.co.za&la=en&type=NS … I’m kinda tempted to go back to my registrar, deleting everything thats there and starting again from scratch, but was holding off until I got some sort of direction first.
-
Yeah, this is pretty cooky. I don’t see anything wrong at all on our end, but that domain is bouncing through quite a few things.
I recommend contacting your registrar.
Make sure that you’re just linking to the following nameservers:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COMNo other nameservers, forwarding, A records, etc.

staff-blorbo – i have checked with my domain registrar, he advises that when the site was pointing to google sites, he had to create a cname to verify ownership of the the domain. I always assumed that this was just for verification to access google apps so I could make use of the emails. But maybe this is part of the problem. So he wants to know can we not transfer this cname to WP? do you have a record that we can point to. Or do we just delete it completely and then re-verify ownership of domain via the WP control panel?
-
Above my paygrade here but there is some info on using Google Email – that might help – there is a process in place to use gmail with domains mapped to WordPress.COM blogs. The cname might very well be the problem.
Hope this helps.

thanks @auxclass, you know I saw this previously, but I always assumed that the verification described is when you are first setting up your google apps account, and since mine has been up and operational for a while now I thought this step was not needed. I also figured that the cname for google if not changed / updated would only affect my emails, but my site should be working?
-
staff-blorbo – ok, so my registrar has decided to remove all NS, A and CNAME records on our hosting server. He wants to leave it for tonight blank to allow propagation as NULL and then tomorrow we will start fresh with only entering NS1 /2/3 .wordpress.com. What I need to know now, is I will then have to verify my domain for google apps in the control panel. Please can you advise how do I format the cname record? The examples in notes is for txt, but if I try to verify with google now, it only allows a cname or html. To confirm, this is to verify my ownership of the domain so that my emails will work. Thanks.
-
I think you should be able to go straight to just the ns1.wordpress.com / ns2 / ns3 – that would save you waiting another 24 hours on the propagation – I don’t know as setting things to NULL will get you anything as the name servers will be change to wordpress.com at some point anyway – getting the name servers set correctly should get your blog properly mapped and then you can deal with the email.
I think @airodeyssey uses gmail with his mapped site to maybe he will stop by and share his settings or experience.

Basically, once the domain is mapped here, the verification for Google Apps needs to be done through our DNS panel.
You can do that following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/
-
staff-blorbo.. thanks, i have gone through that guide, however what i want to know is how to format the cname entry. when i go to my google domain panel, i only have the option of html or cname verification. from what i understand the cname has to be formated in a specific way. the first 2 sections i get, cname google2323232222 ??? but what comes in the ??? section. I think its meant to have host name, but would that be google.com as the host or my domain bbtafrica.co.za as the host or?
-
We can’t support verifying through Google as a CNAME record, just a TXT record, which they list as “other.”
Can you get back to step 7 in the guide?

I think @airodeyssey uses gmail with his mapped site to maybe he will stop by and share his settings or experience.
Just a howdy here. I enrolled into Google Apps last year, and since then the procedure changed. And in any case, macmanx is helping cage108 now :-)
-
staff-blorbo – the user guide deals with setting up new google apps accounts so maybe thats why its different, but mine is an existing account with google, and when I go to the verification section the only options are html or cname. There is no “other” option. Does this mean that this is not going to work if WP cant verify on a cname record?
-
We definitely need a TXT record, but don’t give up on it just yet. I recommend asking around the Google Apps user community, or Google Apps support. That option has to be hidden in there somewhere, at least it used to be readily available for existing users too.
-
i have been trolling around forums all night and I cant find how to add txt record. I can only assume that either its only for new activations or the process at google has changed. its so frustrating as in theory it seems so easy but 1 wrong move and my emails which are currently working will die
