site owner email address not known
-
I’ve taken over management of this site, and setup my wordpress.com user as an admin to do that. The domain associated with the site expired last week.
I tried logging in as the site owner, but was blocked for ‘security reasons’. How do I find out what email address is associated with the site owner user, so I can ask them to update the password?
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

WordPress.com just can’t and won’t give you pzersonal information on demand due to privacy regulations. You’ll have to wait untill a Staff member is available to sort things out.

Also, I’ve found the person who originally owned the site is now deceased. It might be we’ll have to abandon the site name. I’m unlikely to be able to get a death certificate.

Hi @morrowwm apologies for your loss. It is possible to gain control of a site after the original owner is deceased, and we outline the process here. However, you will need a death certificate to establish the right to take over the account.
When a WordPress.com site owner passes away we like to help the family or estate determine what happens with their loved one’s WordPress.com site. To notify WordPress.com about a deceased site owner, please email us at help@wordpress.com and include the site owner’s name or e-mail address for the account (if known), the URL/site address, a brief explanation of the situation, and the desired actIf you are not able to, you may wish to ask the estate to take over ownership instead. Once the site is under their control, it can be transferred using the process here:
You can transfer ownership of a site or blog to another WordPress.com user account by following the steps in this guide. Step 1: Add the New Owner To start, invite the new owner to the site, assigning them the Administrator role: Visit your dashboard. Navigate to Users → All Users. Under the Team tab, click the “Add a team member” button. Select the Administrator role from theHope this helps, and again apologies for your loss.

As I said, getting the death certificate is likely impossible. If that is the only recourse you have, then we will have to shut down the site I guess.
Is it possible to tie the web content to a new site, or would I have to copy over each page individually. -
Hi again,
If that is the only recourse you have, then we will have to shut down the site I guess.
Sadly this will also require the same proof, since only the owner of a site (or in the case of a deceased owner, their estate) can take a site offline.
Is it possible to tie the web content to a new site, or would I have to copy over each page individually.
Since the domain is expired, I have set the site to it’s default (free) URL of https://enchoreast.wordpress.com/
The only upgrade on this site is the domain, so the site itself (what you see now) will not change. Free sites are forever. However, as an administrator on the site you can export the contents, and import them into a new WordPress.com site.
You can follow the process here to export: https://wordpress.com/support/export/
You can start a new site here under your account to import the contents into: https://wordpress.com/start/
Once you have your new site set up, you can import using the steps here:
If you want to move content to WordPress.com from another WordPress site (either WordPress.com or a WordPress.org site), use the Import Content option. This option will import a copy of your pages, posts, and media to your new WordPress.com site, but not plugins, theme, or other design elements. Import the Content To import content from another WordPress site: First, export your site’sHope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

OK, great. I’m still pursuing channels to find the current custodian of the site owner email address.
But the free domain will work for now, thank you very much.
