Site ownership

I hope that this is not too lazy for a question. I am making a site for someone, as a gift. I pay for the site.

What can I do to make it so that the person knows that they have the right to do whatever they want with the site and could make that case to anyone they needed to make that case to?

That could mean ownership of the account or possibly other things, I’m not sure.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can transfer a site to another WordPress.com account. Make sure you transfer the domain (first) too. The new owner of the domain will need to update the contact information for the domain also and then they will be responsible for paying for the annual renewals. https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

Ok. That is helpful. I’m looking for something that doesn’t require another person to do anything though. I should probably read about copy rights.

I want to send someone a document that they could, if needed, give to a lawyer that says they can do whatever they want with the site and I suppose also not sue me etc… But that doesn’t require them to do anything until a day in the future when they would want to.

    A bill of no rights?

I think what you are wanting to do with legal paperwork would conflict with the rules and regulations of WordPress.com. Each site only has one owner and that is the person/username/account that created it (unless it is transferred as described above). You have slightly complicated things by purchasing a custom domain. Someone has to keep paying the annual renewals for the upgraded plan and domain. Yes, you can continue to do that if you wish, and give someone else access to the site as well as you by making them an Editor. https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/ but you would still own the site not them.
I have added the modlook tag to ask if a member of staff can give you further/better advice than I can.

  • @monotropan it’s possible to have a separate site owner, and since there’s nothing to pay for there you’d be fine. So we can definitely help you set that up.

As for domain ownership, as an owner they’d be free to cancel the domain or transfer it to another provider. If they transferred it to another provider, any arrangements you’d made with us would not get transferred over.
