Site redirect
-
Hello. I was advised to redirect my site to my new domain. Can I do that while using the free WordPress.com plan and how necessary is it?
The site I need help with is [visible only to staff] (email visible only to moderators and staff).

Hi there,
Yes, you can redirect with a free plan if you purchase the Site Redirect upgrade:
https://wordpress.com/support/site-redirect/Please note: In order for the Site Redirect to work correctly, the permalinks on the new site (the one you’re redirecting to) should match those at WordPress.com.
how necessary is it?
That really depends on what you would like to achieve with the redirect and also depends on what address do you want to redirect to.
If you are planning to use another site hosted by WordPress.com you can merge all your followers to your new site address.
Let us know if you have any further questions.

Hi there,
Can you give a bit more information on what exactly you’re trying to achieve? Who advised you to redirect your site?
A redirect is meant for when you want to send people coming to your WordPress.com address, to a completely different website. So you’ll only want to do this if you’ve started a new website at another provider, and you want people clicking on existing links for your WordPress.com site to find the new site instead.
If you bought a domain and you want your existing WordPress.com site to appear at that domain, then you need to map the domain instead. You’ll need to change the domain’s name servers at your domain provider to point it to us, and then you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan so you can add our domain mapping upgrade to connect the domain on our end.

Hello. I wanted to redirect my subdomain to my new domain and I’ve done that already. I get to retain my traffic and Google ranking right? Is there anything else I need to know concerning that?
Also, for my email subscribers/followers is there a way I can redirect them to a new email and email platform like MailChimp and the likes?

Hi there,
So, you want to redirect your old site (niannilifestyleblog.wordpress.com) to your new one (niannilifestyleblog.com), correct?
If that’s the case, then I can migrate your followers to your new site. Then you’ll be able move to a different service like MailChimp.

Yes. I’ve been able to redirect it but most of the posts are showing 404 error. Is there a way you can help me with that?
Great, migrating my followers to my new site will be awesome. Please let me know when you do. Thanks.
-
Would you please give me a URL of a post that’s failing to redirect and where it should be going?
-
Hello, here’s a link to a URL failing to redirect.
It keeps showing 404 error. Is there a way I can correct it?
-
Ah, I see the problem.
The Site Redirect upgrade will only work for posts if you use the same date and name permalink structure at Settings > Permalinks in your new site’s Dashboard.
-
I changed my new site permalink to match the one of WordPress.com that is the day and name.

https://niannilifestyleblog.com/2020/08/22/20-powerful-affirmations-to-help-you-stop-overthinking/ is working now. :)
It’s the /amp/ that won’t work unless you install an AMP plugin, like https://wordpress.org/plugins/amp/
