Site redirect informations

  Hi, I have 2 questions:

  1)
  I would like to know if the service “Site Redirects”
  performs the redirect through the file. “htaccess” that contains something like:
  redirect 301 / http://www.newdomain.com/

  2)
  In the informations that I find in the page
  http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
  I read that the redirect can be done to a domain
  http://example.com

  It is just an example or you can actually just redirect to the url without the “www.”?
  I have a domain like http://www.example.com
  and I need that the redirect is made to http://www.example.com

  The site redirect upgrade does a 301 redirect for your permalinks. If you’d like to redirect your blog to a http://www.example.com site then you can do that.
