site redirect upgrade
-
I have just changed my blog name and now need to redirect site traffic from my old address, rebeccabblog.wordpress.com. I have just gone to the Store to purchase a site redirect but it’s asking me to redirect from the new blog name,, not the old one! Seemingly I needed to action the redirect before I changed my blog name – am I still able to redirect from the old one?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
Wait. Did you change the blog URL or do you have two separate blogs? If so, what are their URLs?
-
My old blog was rebeccabblog.wordpress.com (started in April so not that old). I wanted to change the URL which I have now done today to beautyvoyage.wordpress.com. But as I have now deleted the old blog I can’t do a redirect :-( Is there anyway around this as I want to do everything I can to not lose traffic…

Hi there, it looks like you deleted the old site (rebeccabblog.wordpress.com) rather than following our instructions for changing a blog address.
Once a site is deleted, it is no longer accessible, and there are many warnings along the way that must be bypassed in order to finally delete your site. Since it’s deleted and no longer accessible, it’s not possible to purchase a redirect upgrade for it.

Hi Kathrynwp,
Thanks for your reply. I did not see many warnings along the way, I am actually a pretty careful and methodical person and if there were I would not have deleted it! I simply went to the site redirect upgrade section in the Store – it does not say anywhere there that you need to keep the original site if you want to redirect. Maybe if there was it could prevent others from making the same mistake? Also, what if I add the old blog address again? Would this work?

Ah, this is my mistake. I do see that you used the tool to change the address, rather than deleting the site directly. Let me investigate further and I’ll get back to you. Sorry about that!

Do you remembering checking off the box to discard your current address during the name change process?

Doing so would have made it look like your site is deleted, which is what I see now.
The instructions above that say:
After changing your blog address you can transfer traffic from the old address. You can do so by purchasing the Site Redirect upgrade. Do not discard your current address if you wish to do this.
If you did check the box it would have discarded your address, resulting in the situation we see now. Does this ring any bells?

Hi, yes I seem to remember doing this – I think I didn’t quite understand it which is why I went ahead. My fault!
-
I was able to undo this and you should now be able to log in and and purchase the site redirect here:

Thanks for your help, I just purchased the site redirect which went through okay. However I just searched for a recent blog post in Google and it came up in the search but when I clicked the link it said that it was no longer available. Do I need to wait a while before the links will work again?
-
Hi there – the redirects are working at my end, so you might need to clear your browser’s cache to see the effect.
I clicked http://rebeccabblog.wordpress.com/about-2/ via a Google search result and was taken to http://beautyvoyage.wordpress.com/about-2/ automatically.
Please try clearing your cache – or a different browser – and let me know how it goes.

Sorry me again! Can you help with the Blackberry app? My stats seem to have gone awol since doing the redirect – it’s now only showing stats from yesterday and today, despite having chosen the correct blog to view. Stats on the actual site seem to be fine however…

Hi there, you can get help with a Blackberry-specific problem in our Blackberry app forums here: http://blackberry.forums.wordpress.org/
Good luck!
