Site Redirect Upgrade question
-
Hello,
I have a question about the Site Redirect Upgrade option—I want to make sure I understand how it works before I purchase it. I have a WordPress.com site with my own paid domain name. I no longer want to maintain the site (i.e. don’t need the content), but would like to hold on to the domain name and redirect it to a site hosted elsewhere. Is the Site Redirect Upgrade the right option for me to accomplish this? I don’t want to transfer the whole site over to a new domain name, I just want the domain name to open to another site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you have content at a new host and you want to have visitors to janiekliever.com. to end up on the new site & host? If so you would probably do the equivalent of domain mapping with your new host and change the name servers for janiekliever.com. from WordPress.COM to your new host.
Or do you just want the traffic from janiekliever.com. to be dumped onto a new domain name not hosted here? That would be domain forwarding (about the same as site redirect) and I don’t know if the site redirect could be used on janiekliever.com. I will flag this for staff attention on this part of the question.
Site redirect would direct traffic from //janiekliever.wordpress.com (your base blog that you have the domain mapping for) to a different web site.
Normally if a person has had a custom domain name for some time, to the point that the base blog is not in search results people change the name servers to the new host for the custom domain name ( in your case janiekliever.com) then set the base blog (/janiekliever.wordpress.com) to Private (to keep search engines out) and depending on how long the custom domain has been mapped they might buy the site redirect for a year to help the odd straggler links to be updated.
Hope this helps a bit

Thanks, auxclass. It sounds like domain mapping might be what I have in mind. I’ll look into that.

Actually, if I’m understanding domain mapping correctly, it won’t work for what I’m going for—I need something like domain mapping in reverse. I don’t want visitors to access janiekliever.com (and its content) at my other domain; I want someone typing in or searching for janiekliever.com to end up at the other domain and website.
UPDATE: For anyone searching for a similar topic, I think I found the answer after searching through the forums some more (at least for my situation): On your Dashboard, go to My Domains>Edit Domain>Edit DNS. You’ll have to have to add a new CNAME and redirect the A record—you can get instructions from your host. If you’re on Moonfruit like me, it’s the following:
1. Add a CNAME record named ‘www’, and point it to cdn.sitemakerlive.com. – with the dot at the end
2. Change the root A record so that it points to 146.101.249.107 -
It sounds you like need the Site Redirect Upgrade:
You can add a redirect here:
https://janiekliever.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php
After activation, simply make sure that the Site Redirect is set as your site’s Primary Domain:
https://janiekliever.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
