Site redirection from wordpress.com to a self hosted site – google search

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!

I recently moved all my blog posts, and my followers from my glovers wordpress.com blog to my self hosted site http://www.t-lovers.com

The I decided to re-direct my blog to my new site. And I bought site redirection to the new site. And then I tried to Google search on topics through which people often came to my blog. And in Google search my old blog came up. So I clicked on it, expecting that it will be re-directed to my new site. But no, it actually said – Error, so the old blog didn’t appear, and my new blog on my new site didn’t appear too.
How does the re-direction work with regard to Google search, and people clicking on the search results directing to the old blog’s entries. Should it automatically re-direct them to the same entries on the new site (the new site has identical blog entries to the old blog)? Or how does it work?
If I delete all my posts from the old blog, does it mean that the posts on the new site will appear in Google search?
    Please let me know!
PS. I cancelled the site-redirection service until I figure out how it works. But if in order to answer my question you need me to purchase site-redirection again, please let me know, and I will do that.

    Thank You!
    Lera

    Hi Lera,

In order for the Site Redirect to work the way you describe (blog posts at WordPress.com automatically re-route to the same post at t-lovers.com), the posts will need to have the same permalink structure. For example, take a recent post “Tea is 360 Degree Around Us”. Here are the two permalink structures:

    http://t-lovers.com/?p=765

    vs.

Tea is 360 Degree Around Us

For this to work correctly, the permalink structure at t-lovers.com should be the following:

    t-lovers.com/2014/02/12/tea-is-360-degree-around-us/

    Does that make sense?

To change this on your self-hosted blog, navigate to your Dashboard then to Settings -> Permalinks. From the menu, select the option “Day and name” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/fVHt

Then, re-enable the Site Redirect option. Everything should work smoothly going forward. Just a note, any previous links you have posted to Facebook with the previous permalink (http://t-lovers.com/?p=765 for example) will not work after you switch the structure.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

    Dear Jeremy!

Thank you for you advice. I followed all the steps advised by you, but after I have changed permalinks in the settings, when I go back to the BLOG page it gives me the error message:
    Page Not Found: Error 404

The requested URL was not found on this server.

Why could it be? Am I doing something wrong? It doesn’t even let me go onto the BLOG page, and I am not sure why this is…
Would you be able to help me?
    Lera

actually, when I change permalinks, it doesn’t allow me to go into any pages on the site – as far as I understand, the permalinks are changed not only for the posts on the blog page, but also on the actual pages of the site. is there a way to avoid it and change permalinks only on the posts of the blog page?

    Hi!

    See my answers below:

After I have changed permalinks in the settings, when I go back to the BLOG page it gives me the error message:
    Page Not Found: Error 404
The requested URL was not found on this server.

It looks like you’ve changed the permalinks back to their original setting. When you first change the permalinks on your site, you will likely need to clear your browser’s cache and cookies. Instructions can be found here:

    en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

Can you give that a try (setting permalinks and then clearing cache)?

Ss there a way to avoid it and change permalinks only on the posts of the blog page?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to change permalinks only on certain elements of your site. However, changing the permalinks on your pages from “/page_ID…” to “/blog” can be beneficial for SEO purposes so I would recommend making this change anyway.

Give it a go and let me know if you hit any errors!

    no, it didn’t work.
I set the permalinks to day and name, and then emptied cache and removed all cookies, and then refreshed the whole thing, and even restarted my computer. But it doesn’t work.
When I go to any pages apart from Home one, it shows me Error Messages…

    Why is this happening?

I am sorry. But now my BLOG page doesn’t appear with default OR changed permalinks!!! it just shows error message for both!!!
    Please help!

    Hi Lera,

Your blog appears to be loading correctly now on my side with the changed permalinks as shown here:

The URL in the screenshot is t-lovers.com/blog/. Is this working on your side as well now?

    Hello Jeremy!

I asked my friend who helps me with the website to look at it, and apparently there was supposed to be some code that needed to be written to link Pages to the new hyperlinks. Or something along these lines.
Basically something needed to be done for it to work. But I am not sure what. But at least it works now!
Thank you for your help! :)))
