site redirection vs subdomain mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been running a blog on wordpress.com for some time (http://myhealthbox.wordpress.com) now I would like to run the blog on my own domain (myhealthbox.eu) but keeping all incoming links and SEO juice the blog has built up over time.

I need to understand whether this can be achieved using subdomain mapping (without actually having to build a wordpress site on my domain).

In the event I have to do a site redirection would that mean exporting the wordpress.com site and importing it into the new domain (in fact duplicating the site) plus setting up site redirection ?

Thanks for any clarification on this issue

If you are happy with the way your current site works, and want to keep your existing links, the easiest thing to do is purchase the domain mapping upgrade. Your blog won’t actually move at all, you’ll just purchase the domain myhealthbox.eu and “map” it to your site.

Here’s more on how that works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/

Let me know if you have anymore questions, or if you run into any trouble with the upgrade.

If that solution doesn’t work for you let me know that as well and we’ll figure out something else!

Thanks for the reply, the problem with the current site and the way it works is that it is not contributing to the “reputation” of my brand (and this is something that domain mapping can fix) but also that incoming links to the blog site do not contrinute to the reputation of my main domain. My assumption is that even with domain mapping search engine will eventually see incoming links as “belonging” to the wordpress.com domain while I need incoming links and keywords positioning in search engines to be passed on to my main domain. My idea is that only with a site move I willbe able to achieve this.

My assumption is that even with domain mapping search engine will eventually see incoming links as “belonging” to the wordpress.com

Actually, that’s not true. With the domain mapping upgrade, search engines will attribute your content to your domain, not WordPress.com’s domain.

In that way, domain names are more like phone numbers than they are like physical addresses. The phone company “points” a number to your phone and then you can receive calls and texts on it. If you change phones, they re-point the number to the new phone. Nothing really changes for the people who call you–they don’t even notice the difference.

Since you already have content (that I assume you want to keep) on myhealthbox.eu, what you would want to do is map your blog to blog.myhealthbox.eu. Here’s how that works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/

It’s also worth pointing out that if you do the domain mapping your blog will be accessible from both http://myhealthbox.wordpress.com and blog.myhealthbox.eu. That means you won’t lose any of your visitors who have bookmarked old links and they will seamlessly be moved to the new address.

If you don’t want to do domain mapping, your other option is to purchase hosting and set up a new site with WordPress.ORG software. Then you’d have to export your content from WordPress.com, import it into your new site, and re-do your theme and other settings. Here’s how that works: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

If you choose this path you can move your followers and stats over to the new site like this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/#wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-site

Hope that helps! let me know if you have any more questions.

Ok, I have done the mapping, let’s see how Google likes it :)

    Thanks

Since your blog does not seem to have much content other than directing traffic to your real site to buy things – one line of text with one link off your blog per Post

You might also review the TOS before you get too far along:

Just one questions: where do you see on my site that you can buy things ? We are not an ecommerce site, we have used the blog mainly to notify users of information updates.

We are now going to use it for posting articles but before we do this we want to make sure that traffic and links get properly attributed to our domain (myhealthbox.eu) and not to the hosting domain (wordpress).

    Hope it makes sense.

    liz,

just checking with Google Analytics and I noticed that referrals to my site still come from myhealthbox.wordpress.com and not from blog.myhealthbox.eu, what do you think ?

Is Google looking at the actual IP to determine referrals ?

No, he means that the blog directs people to your site in every post; that could make your blog vulnerable to suspension.

Your new domain name will take time to build up googlejuice. In the meantime the blog’s old URL will outrank the new one. Just wait.
