I’d like my site to be private and only display it’s content to users who have registered at my site, but the only way I’ve found is to have my students register for wordpress.com, which requires them to create their own site. Is there a way to make it private and allow only pre registered users view the site?

but the only way I’ve found is to have my students register for wordpress.com, which requires them to create their own site.

All they need to do is register a username account so the software will recognize them as an authorized user and allow them access. They are not required to register a blog.

Is there a way to make it private and allow only pre registered users view the site?

No. You can set up your own registration on a WordPress.ORG install but not on a free hosted WordPress.com blog.

To change blog visibility to Private go to Dashboard > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author on your blog. To invite multiple authors to contribute to the blog
    adding users http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/
    user roles http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/#invite-people-to-view-your-private-blog

NOTE: You can send out only 10 invitations at any point in time then wait and send ten more. This is a built-in spammer protection.

I am very surprised and sad that WordPress now makes us go through this verification code narrow (=Engpass?).

Before, I was only surprised and sad when WordPress for the first time used this burocratic style when I tried to go and see my best friend’s :-) pretty blog that sits on the same IP as mine, which WordPress knows very well, so that they could have said something like “Cantueso, again snooping on your friend’s web?”

These security measures that take end users like us some 20 minutes to figure out, since we also are not yet acquainted with those “apps” and tablets and smartphones …….

when it has become known the world over that a really smart kid can run circles around the Pentagon and even around Merkel,
what are the security measures for? Instead, why not invent an “app” that allows users to download their complete blog and keep a copy at home?

    :-(
