site shut down, non-permanent

    Hey there everybody,
    I’ve got two problems, I really hope you can help me with.

    Problem 1
    I’m running a website, that I want to shut down for a limited time, but without loosing the content.
    What would be an adequate solution here?

    Where I’ve already been:
    A)
    I’ve been told that switching the site to ‘private’ in the privacy-settings of my wordpress account (wordpress.com) would do the job. Unfortunately I can’t find such an option there.
    Same goes for my own website’s wordpress interface when I’m logged in as admin: I can’t switch the whole site private or password-protected, only single pages. Is there a button I’m missing?

    B)
    Another idea was to rename the index.htm until I want to go online again. Unfortunately I don’t seem to own the file in question, the closest I get is a ‘index.php’, renaming the latter is without consequences.

    Problem 2
    I was pressing for some ways to do so in a secure way after I received messages that mails that where sent from my account whithout my knowledge bounced off other people’s firewalls, so supposedly Im hacked or pawned or whatever the correct term is (Yes, updating is not my hobby #1).

    I already changed the password. Question: Together with turning the site private or password-protected: Would that be sufficient for the moment or is whoever is using my account still able to abuse it?

    Hello there, it seems that your site is not hosted on WordPress.com but a self-hosted site using the open source WordPress software.

    I found a guide on turning your entire site to Private mode, seems like it requires a plugin to do that.
