Site suddenly sending out full post in email instead of excerpt

Hi, I’ve not used my blog in a while and today I opened things up again and sent out a few posts. Previously, it was only sending excerpts via email to subscribers, so they’d have to click to read the post on WordPress. Now it’s sending the whole post in email. I’ve checked my settings and the checkbox next to “limit feed to excerpt only” is checked. This is under writing settings. I can’t figure out how to fix this, please help if you can!

It started early last week. I thought it may have been a bug or something in the settings of my blog. I checked the settings, and all seems ok there. It’s happening to everyone as all email notifications I get of new posts now show the full post, not the excerpt. I’ll let you know if anyone from WordPress responds to my ticket, and I’ll keep a lookout here to see if you get a response.

thanks so much for that. I haven’t submitted a support ticket, so fingers crossed one of us will hear back soon. Are there any more settings I should check? I assumed it was because I’d been away for a while and maybe something had changed, but it sounds unlikely.

Under ‘Reading’ settings, check that the setting for ‘For each post in a feed, include‘ is set to ‘Excerpt‘ and not Full text.
I do wonder if it may be theme related. I’m still using a Classic theme, whereas I’ve noticed notification emails from those using FSE themes are only showing an excerpt.

Thanks for that. I did have that setting set to excerpt already, so it mustn’t be that. My theme is called “eighties” and I don’t know if that’s a classic theme or not? I’ve had this blog since about 2017/18.

Unless you’ve changed the theme since then, it’s going to be a classic theme. I’ve seen more and more users report this problem, so I’m hoping we’ll get a response from somebody at WordPress soon.
Excerpts are still showing on the WordPress Reader, so it just seems to be email notifications where it’s missing.

No, I don’t remember changing the theme. That’s an interesting correlation. It would be great to get confirmation and a fix soon! Yes, I just checked the reader and noticed the excerpts are still there, thankfully. Fingers crossed they can fix the emails now!

Just wondering if WordPress staff reply to these posts? The last time I posted here, it seemed common for staff to reply and assist with these requests. Does this no longer happen? I’m not a paid user, so is there any hope of getting a reply or help another way?

Hi again, I just wanted to let you know that I managed to get hold of somebody at WordPress and the problem has now been fixed.
However, you need to reset the setting back to ‘Excerpt’ as it seems the fixed has resulted in the setting defaulting back to ‘Full text.’
