Site Suggestion and advice

We are a new group who would like to get the most for our $ (which as a non-profit isn’t much). I am willing to purchase the upgrade that is really needed, but I don’t need something more than something basic.

My needs are simply: I want to be able to control membership on the site. I don’t want it to be a pay site, just have people registered to view content. My understanding is that I can’t do that with our site the way that is is currently.

But what would I need to do…Can I do it with the $18/year domain registration? Or do I need to do the $99/year bundle?

I really need to do this asap; so any help at all would be immensely appreciated.

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

It depends on what you mean by “control membership”.

On WordPress.com you can have users on a site with different levels of access:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

This is part of the basic WordPress.com featureset and does not require an upgrade.

Sometimes, though, you need higher level functionality than what WordPress.com offers, and in those cases, it is best to consider a self-hosted WordPress site with a membership plugin.

Some of the options available to you on self-hosted WordPress site can be found here:

By controlling membership, I mean having people register on the site before being able to view the content. We will eventually have investigation reports posted (when authorized), but if someone wants to follow our blog/site…I would rather be able to keep better tabs on who is viewing things.

I am the sole administrator of the site, and will keep it that way for now, but I want to limit who can see our content without making it private.

The problem started because my group broke from another group. Now we are being harassed by them for every single word we put out there. It is a control thing. We are not in competition, by any means. They are in research, we are in investigations. They are in PA, we are in WI.

I would be able to control who sees things by having the Membership plugin. I assume that my site as it currently is, can not do that. But if I upgraded, I could. I just don’t know just how much I would have to go to get what I am looking for.

I’m willing to pay for the $99 bundle if it will give me more of a control of who can see content. I guess I was just looking for some advice as to what the best road would be to go down. I am not looking to make it a pay membership site; only a register name and email type of membership.

    Does that make more sense?

There is no bundle that achieves what you aim to do ie. “more of a control of who can see content” and installing plugins.

There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install plugins.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

FTP access and plugins are only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.

What you want to do adds up to hiring a web host and setting up your own WordPress.ORG install.
