Site Titles and URLS

I am working for a client who has two domains, and they need to move to the new one, they do not want to lose their presence on the internet because some pages have to be edited to relate to the new website.
As a quick fix, I want to change the site title to the new Domain, but leave wordpress URL and Site address URL to point to the old website until the new one has all the pages edited and imported into the new site, will this cause any problems and will the site title when searched resolve to the old domain until i have made the changes

    Thank you

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Can you tell us the URL of the site and what you’re changing it to? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

    Thank you!

    it’s just a simple request

the old domain and site address are going to be phased out but images and media exist in the old site which will be changed and imported to the new website,, I want the new website urls to point to old website as a temporary fix will this cause a problem as surely the URL’s will just resolve to old website when searching fir the new website on the site address?

  • Hi there,

I believe @staff-heroponriki wanted the site URLs to confirm whether the sites and domains were hosted with us here at WordPress.com or elsewhere so that we could provide the best solution to your request.

I would suggest creating a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain while building the site and use that as a placeholder until you’re ready to move your old site over to the new site. The site starts off private until you are ready to launch it.

Once you are done developing the site, you can transfer the domain, connect the domain, or register a new one. So, essentially you can temporarily set the new domain as the primary domain for the old site and have the old site’s URL redirect to the new domain until the new site is up and running. Then, you can point the domain to the new site. If you’d like, please provide the URLs and we can provide further instructions on how to best set this up.

    Hope this helps.

both Domains are registered with IONOS, But websites are created in WordPress Obviously with the URLS Pointing to the relevant domains. I dont want to do to much development work on this because of the volume of media involved on the old website, Again I repeat my plan of action

    for the new Domain

The site title will Remain “NewBusinessname” as this i am led to believe is what would appear in a search engine. or what users would search for.

WordPressaddress URL for the “NewBusiness” will be changed to the “oldbusiness” URL

Site address URL for “Newbusiness” will be changed to the “oldbusiness URL

Again is I keep re-iterating, this is just a temporary fix, I cannot see this would be a massive issue as a temporary fix of course unless there is a security issue when logging back in after changes, I dont want to create sub domains or make this more involved than it is, I just need confirmation that this would work and the “Newbusiness” would resolve to the old website?, until i have made changes to all the media, pages and text that relates to the old website

    Thank you

    Hello!

As we previously explained, we’d need the exact site URLs before we’d be able to assist with the request.

This is important because if you’re referring to sites which are not hosted on WordPress.com (which would be a self-hosted WordPress site), you can try to find a solution or post a new request on WordPress.org Support Forums.

You can find the Support Forums for self-hosted WordPress sites here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/.

On the other hand, if the sites you’re referring to are hosted on WordPress.com, we’re happy to take a look at them once you let us know about their URLs.

both on Ionos but using the embeded wordpress shortcut on Ionos.co.uk

  • Hey there,

It doesn’t sound like the site is hosted with WordPress.com, so we’re unable to help via these forums.

If you’d like assistance, the sites would need to be hosted at WordPress.com, and we actually have migration plugin to help make that possible. https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpcom-migration/

The site here at WordPress.com would need to be on the business plan in order for us to help.

I hope this is useful information for you.
