Site Transfer via FTP/Files

What is the best way to transfer an old website with programs like FileZilla Client, and will there be additional steps to access the wordpress site via FTP?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi!

Are you trying to import content from one site to another?

Can you also help us with the links of both the sites and I can have a look at it to suggest further.

If both the sites are on WordPress.com, I encourage you to read export and import documentations. They should cover most aspects of moving content from one site to another.

    Thanks for the reply @strikebuys

I created a WP account to have someone transfer me their site, but the interface is different than I remember it 2 years ago.

After reading the import link you provided- it seems like importing via JetPack will be a smooth transfer. Any thoughts?

  • Before I can answer further, can you help me with both the links? I can have a look at them and assist further.

I’d be transferring peggyknight.com to a site not yet created under my account, https://zach350.wordpress.com/ for example

  • Thanks. peggyknight.com is a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site. You can export the content of peggyknight.com to a .xml file format on this page http://peggyknight.com/wp-admin/export.php

Post that, visit https://wordpress.com/settings/import to import the content using the .xml file you downloaded previously.

Make sure your site peggyknight.com continues to be online during this process, as only then media files from peggyknight.com will be successfully imported to your new WordPress.com site.

Does this help? Feel free to get back if you have questions.

It definitely helps, thank you for all your time @strikebuys!!

One more quick clarification and I think I will leave you alone :)

When you say “Post that”, do you mean to download it or send an actual POST request to the other site?

  • No, when I said “Post that”, I meant “after that” – as in, after that/next, in general.

    Get the point? :)

    No problem! Happy to help!

    Hey strikebuys,

    To Re-Iterate:
“I’ve just exported the XML, but am unable to reproduce a website on WordPress.com using the import setting. It creates many pages, some with/without content, but all are not updated to the correct theme yet. Does this mean it’s not compatible with this version of WordPress, or was the transfer just poorly executed?”

  • Here’s what I recommend.

    1. Enable the same theme and ensure same customizations as the one you had on your previous WordPress site.
    2. Import now.

This would ensure that all your content is imported and looks just as the same as on your previous site.

Additionally, did you see a success notice after the import ended?

I saw a success notice, but was unable to locate the same theme and plugins under the new account.
