Site upload

    Hello

I used to have a wordpress site as a portfolio about ten years ago.

I saved all the original files. Can I just upload the files instead of trying to create a site from scratch all over again?

    Thank you

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Or should I just copy and paste to each page one at a time?

    Thank you

    Hello there!

I’m glad to have you on WordPress.com! To gain access to SFTP/SSH which would be needed to upload your files, you’ll need to upgrade to either the Business or Commerce plan. These plans not only unlock SFTP/SSH but also come with a host of additional features beyond what the Personal plan offers, including 24/7 live chat support and more!

If upgrading isn’t an immediate option, an alternative would be to manually copy and paste the content into each new page. However, keep in mind that this may involve setting up a localhost of WordPress. This will make it easier for you to open and edit those posts or pages using the Block Editor since the post/page data is stored in your site’s database rather than the files themselves.

If you have any questions or if there’s anything else you need assistance with, feel free to let us know. We’re here for you!

Thanks, I us3d to have a WP site hosted by Bravenet.

When I closed the account, I downloaded everything I thought I needed.

Apparently not though. I should have also downloaded the MySql database file too.

I didn’t, is there anything I can do to access/rebuild the original site from the three main folders and admin files I’ve downloaded?

It’s just that I put so much work into the original site, that’s all.

    Thanks for reading.

I’m truly sorry to say that, unfortunately, it’s not possible. The majority of your site’s post and page content resides in the database, specifically the text from those posts and pages. Without access to that database or any other comprehensive backup of your site, you only have the content in your media library and the installed plugins and themes in the wp-content directory. Rebuilding the content from scratch is the only option in this scenario.

I understand this is not the response you were hoping for, and I empathize with the challenge this presents. If there’s anything else I can do to assist or if you have further questions, please let me know.

Thanks again for your kind assistance, much appreciated.

For future reference, if I ever need to download a site I create and store it, wwhat’s the procedure, as in, what should I specifically download?

    Thanks.

  • Hi @artemisbrum8

If it is a WordPress.com site with the Creator plan, you can download a backup of your site by following this: https://wordpress.com/support/restore/#access-your-backups

If it is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you can use a plugin to download a backup. For example, one of the most used is All-in-One WP Migration

    Hope this helps!
