Sitemap Not Found by Google
-
I am trying to get my site out on the web and have key word combinations pull up different pages etc. I have been unsuccessful and have been trying to improve my Search Engine Optimization as has been suggested on multiple help sites. One of the biggest ways they claim is to make sure that my sitemap is being utilized. I have been attempting to register this website with Google Webmaster and am still getting a message that my site doesn’t have a sitemap. I have read through the files here on the Support forum claiming that this is done automatically but again Google says that it can’t find a sitemap for my site. When I manually upload the code to Google’s sitemap under web master tools I get a 404 error message. Is there something else I need to be doing to make this work?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You do not have any posts at all and that’s what search spiders are delighted to find. Pages sit outside the blog structure, do not have RSS feeds and are meant for content that rarely changes. If you want search engine attention and traffic then start publishing posts, not pages.

WordPress.com provides the search engines with a sitemap for your blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/ and pings the search engines every time your publish and edit. It takes time for Google and the other search engines to index your content. http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/ For 10 factors that tend to expedite indexing see > http://www.onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/01/21/omg-i-cant-find-my-blog-on-google/

P.S. I tagged this thread for a Staff followup re: sitemaps. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

Thank you for responding. But forgive me I am confused, we have 3 posts up already and multiple pages. Shouldn’t the search engines key on any words on the site whether on posts or pages? I thought they were looking for content not structure… ?

Try giving Google your sitemap’s direct URL: http://strategiesofintimacy.com/sitemap.xml

Thanks Macmanx, unfortunately that is one of the three combinations I used that received a 404 error message. :)

@asoulremembered
You have published a 3 posts since February and that’s diddly in terms of search engine discover-ability.There’s a lot of baloney circulating about SEO. Search spiders look for keywords in the content of your posts and they can detect whether or not keyword categories/tags are supported by the keywords in the post content or not.
In fact WordPress.com blogs have excellent SEO. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2013/03/22/seo-on-wordpress-com/

http://strategiesofintimacy.com/sitemap.xml is definitely not a 404. Do you see a 404 Note found error if you visit that in your browser?
-
I do not get a 404 using Firefox 21.
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. …

Timethief, Thanks again for helping me with this and I do understand your point about rankings and blogging more often. However, I still am faced with the fact that the Google Webmaster page says “No sitemap found” and when I do as Macmanx suggested it gives me a 404 error code.
I know I will have to earn my way up the ranks so to speak but right now it appears I am not even able to do that since, as I understand it at least, Google can’t index the site in the first place if there is no site map. And regardless of WordPress.com automatically submitting it Google says there isn’t one for my site.

I recommend contacting Google about this. The sitemap is definitely at http://strategiesofintimacy.com/sitemap.xml It’s valid and not issuing a 404. That’s really all we can guarantee. It sounds like a few wires are crossed on Google’s end.
-
Thank you both. I will continue to pursue both sets of suggestions and see if Google has any answers.

http://strategiesofintimacy.com/sitemap.xml in fact a valid address but strategiesofintimacy.comhttp://strategiesofintimacy.com/sitemap.xml is not. The Google page only wanted me to enter the sitemap.xml part of the address, it was adding the rest automatically!
Wow, this part of things is just so far over my head…
