Sitemeter in Javascript
-
So I know that we cannot add the javascript version of sitemeter in wordpress.com. My understanding is that it is done for security reasons.
Can’t wordpress.com write a widget that only allows us to enter the name of our sitemeter account so that we can use the javascript version of sitemeter? The advantage of using site meter in javascript is that we get the full report (including referring URLs).
I think this would be really helpful. I like the reports in wordpress but they don’t seem very complete (I didn’t find a way to see the IP of visitors, etc.)

Have you clicked around in your sitemeter reports? The version for wordpress.com provides entry and exit pages and all sorts of things I hadn’t expected. In fact, when I took one of my blogs self-hosted I kept the .com sitemeter setup I already had.
-
Sorry but I think this is very unlikely to happen. wordpress.com already provides its own stats service so why would it want to help out a competing site? If you install wordpress on your own host you will be able to use the javascript version of sitemeter. Alternatively you could contact support and ask them to consider adding extra info to their stats, but to be honest I don’t think that is very likely either.

I am not sure how sitemeter is competing with WordPress.com? The reports in WordPress.com are definitely not as precise as the ones in sitemeter (or in most other traffic measuring software), so it seems to me this would be beneficial.
Also, I don’t really want to install wordpress on my own host. I love my blog but doubt it would be worth the effort :).
I realize wordpress.com is a free service but I was hoping this is something they could implement.

And yes, I did read this: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/javascript-can-i-use-that-on-my-blog/, but I wasn’t sure if the issue was about not trusting any javascript (regardless of who writes it).
Could this be an option for people using their own domain name but still using the wordpress.com service (would the security risk still be there?)
-
Having domain mapping changes nothing in terms of ToS or restrictions. The risk is to themes, not domain names. This is a multi-user platform so any change to whatever theme you’re using affects everyone else using that theme.

The thing is if wordpress makes a sitemeter widget, then someone else will want an activemeter widget, and someone else a statcounter, and on and on (there are probably a hundred out there).
If you have your own domain and domain mapping from your wordpress.com blog, you are still under the same restrictions because your blog is still hosted at .com.
Your only way to get the full sitemeter stuff is to go self-hosted with your own wordpress install.
One thing to note – and I’ve played extensively with many of the online stats packages – is that they can be incredibly inaccurate due to internet issues. During my testing, the online packages (sitemeter, etc) would sometimes report 7 hits for a day when my internal stats (with my blog host) would show 140. This may go on for several days and then they would come back and be close to my internal stats for a while before they then went the other way and reported 260 while my internal stats reported 140. I’ve quit using any online site stats package for this very reason. They are inconsistent and always will be since they have to send the information over the internet and the internet is less than perfect.

There seems to already be product/website specific widgets, so I am not sure why doing one will open the floodgates. (not sure if they generate javascript though). One thing I would like to see in the stats is the ip of visitors, but for some reason that is not shown. I guess ultimately I will have no choice but to host my blog myself, but I do like the convenience of not having to maintain or pay for it.

mycowardice, automattic already has an own product for stats, so they are not likely to support competitors, as antivalentine already clearly explained in the second answer to this thread.
btw, I use sitemeter on one of my wordpress.com blogs and it shows the (masked) ips, you just have to put a link somewhere on your blog (I use the blogroll for that) with the appropriate link you get from sitemeter. It looks like:
http://sxx.sitemeter.com/meter.asp?site=YourUserName
where xx is a numeric value and YourUserName is the username you use to login to sitemeter.
If you want you can associate the link to an image to show off the number of visitors.
