Sixteen Nine Theme – photo sizing

  Sixteen Nine theme – can’t figure out background custom photo on right-hand side. How do you size it so that it isn’t a small section of your original picture? How do you work with this?

  Hi Eileen,

  I am not sure if you figured this one out already because when I look at your site the background looks great to me. It’s a brick-patterned photo, and while I can’t see the entire photo, it looks interesting to me!

  Nonetheless, I looked at the support page for your theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sixteen-nine/support/), and it turns out that because the theme is responsive, everyone will see a different amount of your image depending on the size of their browser window:

  How to Customize the Background

  By default, the theme will use your background image in the background area of the sidebar. To customize it, follow these steps.

  1. Inside your dashboard, go to Appearance > Background.
  2. Choose your header image from the uploads box on this screen. It does not need to be a specific size, as the theme is responsive and will shrink and grow the image as needed. Larger image do work better, but also take a bit longer to download for the viewer.
  3. Click the “Save changes” button to save and visit the front of your site to see the change.

  So in other words you’ll just have to find an image that works great showing a bit or a lot around the edges. :)

  Thanks for the tips. I thought there must be something I could do to manipulate the photograph to hit exactly where I wanted it. No such luck. I liked the comment on a WP help page that said: Use your inside voice … in regards to Sixteen Nine. It’s pretty but also confounding to a blog newbie. Thanks for the help … Eileen

  So you’re aware, there’s also a support forum which is specifically managed by the theme author which you can access right here:

  It might be worth it to go check it out and since you have the Custom Design add on see if he or she has any suggestions for some CSS magic that will allow you to place your image exactly how you want it. Who knows, they just might!
