Size of Featured Images

    In trying out themes Gateway or Sela, I am trying to do two things: create a large featured image as shown on the demos, and making the home page a static page. I can’t find any info that tells me the correct size for a featured image (that is as large as the demos). Neither can I find any page attributes that allow me to make the home page into a static page. I can find no drop down box with this feature. Can you help me?
