Size Options Gone For Gallery Block?

  • Unknown's avatar

Up until two days ago, when I created a gallery block, I was able to select the size of the images. Now, this option is gone. I also noticed a new AMP setting, it is all now set as “Display as carousel” as default.

    My questions:

    1. Why can I no longer select the size of images in a gallery block? Is this no longer an option? If the block is now auto selecting the size, which size is it putting the images at?

    2. Do all my previous galleries have this “Display as carousel” setting now, in all my previous posts? Is this a new feature? I do not like carousel galleries and do not want this AMP option. I have over a thousand posts, most of them with galleries, so the potential for this being a default AMP setting on all of them is distressing.

    Thanks in advance!

    @marinaneira Hi there,

    1. Why can I no longer select the size of images in a gallery block? Is this no longer an option? If the block is now auto selecting the size, which size is it putting the images at?

Correct, the size options you have now can be selected from the alignment option hovering over the block in the editor. The options of the gallery block are now further streamlined to those of a stand-alone image block.

    2. Do all my previous galleries have this “Display as carousel” setting now, in all my previous posts?

This affects newly created gallery blocks only.

    Is this a new feature?

Yes, this is a new feature. :)

I do not like carousel galleries and do not want this AMP option. I have over a thousand posts, most of them with galleries, so the potential for this being a default AMP setting on all of them is distressing.

Since this affects only your newly created gallery blocks you can safely toggle it off since you prefer that.

Hope this helps, otherwise, let us know!

    PS: keep it colorful :)

Hello, thank you so much for replying. I am still having a little trouble.

Correct, the size options you have now can be selected from the alignment option hovering over the block in the editor. The options of the gallery block are now further streamlined to those of a stand-alone image block.

I’m confused because my image block and my gallery blocks have had the size options in the same area all this time (well, until now). I never adjusted the size of images by hovering over the individual block in the editor. Here is how it looks currently: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t85cjzlbq8ay1pg/Screenshot%202021-05-06%20075742.png?dl=0

Here’s how it looks if the same block is a gallery instead: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjga50mqk5g71ty/Screenshot%202021-05-06%20075812.png?dl=0

Even if I scroll down on the area to the right, I do not see a size option. I’ve hovered, clicked all options on the gallery block itself in the editor, and I see no size option.

This affects newly created gallery blocks only.

This appears to be incorrect. I went back on my old posts and if I open them in the editor, all gallery blocks have this setting on by default 😢

Since this affects only your newly created gallery blocks you can safely toggle it off since you prefer that.

Is there any way to make it so the AMP carousel is off by default in all new posts?

(wasn’t sure how to edit this post… in the first link, I meant to write: “this is how it looks currently on image blocks.)

    @marinaneira Hi again,

In order to answer, let’s use the same post you did to post the screenshots above.

If the block is now auto selecting the size, which size is it putting the images at?

As one can see from its source code, it is a gallery block added to the page and on my viewport -which is a laptop computer- it displays a scaled-down image of 558x418px:

Which when clicked on it is being displayed in even bigger dimensions and has an option to open in full size down (2732x2048px) at the bottom:

Therefore, it is responsive, and the sizing options are available from the options on the top left above the gallery block when selected, as seen in the screenshot below:

Hope this clarifies further this part also:

I’m confused because my image block and my gallery blocks have had the size options in the same area all this time (well, until now). I never adjusted the size of images by hovering over the individual block in the editor.

Even if I scroll down on the area to the right, I do not see a size option. I’ve hovered, clicked all options on the gallery block itself in the editor, and I see no size option.

Now, as to how the older posts are affected or not.

This appears to be incorrect. I went back on my old posts and if I open them in the editor, all gallery blocks have this setting on by default 😢

In my test I was not faced with this. They stayed in tact.
Could you share a screenshot of the sidebar, with the block options in the editor?

Is there any way to make it so the AMP carousel is off by default in all new posts?

Sure, one can turn AMP on or off, here is how:

Hope this helps further, otherwise, let us know! :)

Hello again, thank you so much for continuing to reply.

So, it would seem I do not have the same options as you for some reason. Not just not the same options under align, but even next to it, you seem to have options I do not have: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mw900bx5om9i6mj/Screenshot%202021-05-06%20110835.png?dl=0

You seem to have two options next to alignment which do not exist for me. If I click the align button, all there is is left, right and center. Not the others you have (wide and full width –I do not have that).

Could you share a screenshot of the sidebar, with the block options in the editor?

I did above. Basically, if I click any post I open, no matter how old the post is, and I select a gallery block, it looks like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjga50mqk5g71ty/Screenshot%202021-05-06%20075812.png?dl=0

All gallery blocks show the “display as carousel” AMP option box checked when I open them to edit them. Are you asking me to show you this on an old post instead?

Sure, one can turn AMP on or off, here is how:

I meant to specifically turn off this AMP feature in future gallery blocks as opposed to turn off AMP completely. I’d hate to lose all AMP features just to get rid of this default carousel thing. If I have to do it manually going forward so be it, I’ll just turn off AMP for the whole site.

I would say that being able to set gallery image sizes as before is a bigger concern of these two issues, to me.

I noticed that if I create a new gallery, the images show very small if I right click to open them in a new tab. They only seem to become responsive as you say if I insert them as an image and then click “convert to gallery”.

I’ve edited this post so you can see what I mean: https://marinaneira.com/2021/05/05/sabaws-big-kid-chart-wip-%f0%9f%8c%9f%f0%9f%8c%88/

But basically this is a massive problem for me… I always need my galleries to look like the second one. To top it off, if I try to enlarge the image in the first gallery block (the one that was created as a gallery from the get-go) by left clicking, the image won’t load. The image-block-converted-into-gallery-block loads perfectly when I do the same thing.

Why are they not the same? Should a gallery block not be the same gallery block regardless of how it was created?

    Hi there,

So, it would seem I do not have the same options as you for some reason.

Here’s what I see on a newly created free plan, when adding a gallery block:

On said test site I am using the theme Alves.
Here’s how the same block’s options change when I activate the Twenty Fourteen theme, like in your website:

We see exactly the same. Therefore, block options are related -or limited in this case- by the themes capabilities.

Are you asking me to show you this on an old post instead?

Yes, please. If there are any differences indeed and you do not see the same as in the screenshot you already shared.

If I have to do it manually going forward so be it, I’ll just turn off AMP for the whole site.

Yes, you either have to turn it off manually going forward or disable it for the entire site.

I would say that being able to set gallery image sizes as before is a bigger concern of these two issues, to me.

It is time to consider using another theme then.

Hope this helps, otherwise, let us know!

It is time to consider using another theme then.

I have spent weeks/months creating a very specific look for my theme as I’m sure you can tell, with everything customized in a very specific manner, using custom-made artwork. I would definitely not want to do this. I love Twenty Fourteen. I just want to make sure I understand correctly, as this is so distressing to hear days after I upgraded my plan, but did WordPress just up and remove a feature I had? Why? Is this something that happens a lot? I have invested so much time in this blog. That WordPress could just up and remove such a basic capability from me is discouraging and kind of heartbreaking after so many hours of work every day…. it leaves me speechless. I’m not trying to take it out on you, I do apologize, it just boggles my mind that the solution to losing a feature is “just switch themes” as that is no small feat.

    Hi there,

Why are they not the same? Should a gallery block not be the same gallery block regardless of how it was created?

In an effort to replicate your issue, when I added the first block it worked like a charm. Then I was able to replicate the issue after adding the follow-up block (of an image converted into a gallery block).

Removing the second one of the two blocks returned things to the expected functionality.

Could you try the same and let us know how it went?

did WordPress just up and remove a feature I had?

Themes are only a part of WordPress. Essential but one of many. The Twenty Fourteen was launched in 2014 as the name implies, way before the new editor was even launched.

I understand what it means to invest many hours and effort in customizing a website. The fact of the matter is that with more time passing more limitations might appear. I am trying to inform you, not otherwise.

Therefore, I went ahead on a hunt for possible alternatives in the catalog. Just in case. Here is a potential candidate for your consideration:
    https://wordpress.com/theme/colinear

To begin with, it has sidebars on both sides, featured images on the header area, supports plenty of widget areas, and it is supported by Automattic.

Hope this helps, let us know how it goes!
