Sketch Featured Content

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
    I am trying to get my blog to look similar to the Sketch theme demo.
    However, I cannot get featured content to appear at the top of the page.
    I have set the tag name and still had no luck.
    Could someone please help.

    Thank you!
    Eleanor

  • Hi @eleanortabone!

    It looks like you’re really close!

    Sketch’s featured content section appears only one the Portfolio Page template.

    If you edit your site’s front page under My Site > Pages, you can use Page Settings > Page Attributes to select the Portfolio Page template.

    Once you’ve done that you should start seeing the slider!

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon

    Thank you for getting back to me.
    I apologise, but don’t understand what you are saying?

    Please help further.

    Regards
    Eleanor

  • Hey @eleanortabone!

    It looks like you’ve added the template to your homepage, and the Slider is working now. All figured out? :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon,
    Yes I’ve got the slider working however I don’t know why just my Cooking project appeared…
    As you you see on my portfolio page I have 4 projects.
    I want to select various of these posts to feature on my homepage.
    How do I do this?

    Thank you
    Eleanor

  • Under My Site > Customize > Featured Content, you have set Spinach as the Featured Content Tag.

    That means only items with that tag will appear in the slider.

    You can add that tag to the Portfolio Projects you want to add to the slider, or you can use a different tag (like featured in that space instead, specifically for this purpose).

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon,

    I am unable to set more than one tag…

    Apologies but I don’t understand what you mean by “You can add that tag to the Portfolio Projects you want to add to the slider, or you can use a different tag (like featured in that space instead, specifically for this purpose).”

    Regards
    Eleanor

  • I am unable to set more than one tag…

    You’re not setting more than one tag. You’re either adding the current tag (Spinach) to the projects, or you are changing the tag you use in the Customizer and adding that to the individual items.

    I’m going to assume you mean to include some things in your slide that are not related to Spinach, so let’s go the second route:

    • Open My Site > Customize > Feature Content
      Change the word Spinach to featured
    • Save & Publish (your slider will probably go away – don’t worry we’ll bring it back)
    • Open My Site > Blog Posts
    • Locate each post you want to see in the slider, and edit it
      Under Post Settings, add the featured tag we set in the Customizer. Make sure the post has a Featured Image for the slider to use
    • After you finish with Posts, open My Site > Portfolio
    • Locate each project you want to see in the slider, and edit it
      Under Project Settings, add the featured tag we set in the Customizer. Make sure the project has a Featured Image for the slider to use (note that Tags and Project Tags are different, the slider only looks at Tags

    Now that you’ve set a specific Featured Content tag, and applied that tag to your posts/projects, you should see the items you’ve selected in your slider.

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon

    That all makes sense.
    Except where do Post Settings and Project Settings…

    Sorry!

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon,

    I take that back! I worked it out.

    Moving on!
    On my homepage I have blank boxes displaying all the projects in my ‘Cooking’ portfolio. How do I change this?
    I want to mix this up, having the boxes include various projects from other portfolios.
    How can I do this?

    Regards

    Dear staff-loquaciousloon,

    Following my last message – why are all my pages showing the same thing?
    Oh I am very confused!
    Please help!

    Hi Eleanor,

    On my homepage I have blank boxes displaying all the projects in my ‘Cooking’ portfolio. How do I change this?

    You’ll need to add a featured image to each project. See the Featured Images support page for instructions.

    I want to mix this up, having the boxes include various projects from other portfolios.
    How can I do this?

    There is only one portfolio per site. You may use project types to create pages that display different sets of projects. See the following for help regarding this:
    1. The Viewing Portfolio Projects section of the Portfolios support page, and
    2. The Portfolio Shortcode support page.

    why are all my pages showing the same thing?

    Your front page displays the portfolio because it has the Portfolio Page Template assigned. Any other page that is assigned that template will also display the portfolio. So choose a different template for pages on which you don’t want the portfolio to display.

    Dear musicdoc1,
    Thank you for your help!

    I have set up my pages, however I am still not liking my front page…
    How do alter what boxes are visible?

    Regards
    Eleanor

    Eleanor,

    You’re welcome. Visible? To display an image in a box of the grid you’ll have to add a featured image to the corresponding project. You’ve added featured images to posts in order to display them in the featured content slider. Add featured images to the projects in the same way. Note that the Quick Specs section of the Sketch theme guide says (dimensions in pixels):

    Featured Images for portfolio projects are 800 wide by 600 (landscape), 1067 (portrait), and 800 (square) height.

  • Unknown's avatar

    How do alter what boxes are visible?

    Did you mean how do you add an image to the light gray box, or something else? I see that you presently have three projects with featured images displayed on the front page.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear @musicdoc1,

    No I know how to set feature images.
    What I mean is how do I mange which boxes are visible on my homepage?
    I don’t want all those that are currently on screen to be there.
    Does that make sense?
    Regards
    Eleanor

  • Hi @eleanortabone

    Your home page is using the Portfolio Page template. That template displays the slider at the top, and then your full portfolio. There isn’t a way to remove specific items from this template, as it’s meant to house all of your projects.

    There are two ways to show a specific group of projects. You can link to a Project Type in your menu. Under My Site > Customize > Menus you can create a custom menu. Under the Add Items button while creating your menu, you’ll find Project Types as an option. That will allow you to add links to pages like this one:

    https://eleanortabone.wordpress.com/project-type/food/

    This is a page that WordPress creates automatically, gathering together all of your “food” projects. These pages cannot be selected as your front page.

    The other option is the Portfolio Shortcode, which you have already used on your Cooking page.

    You could create a page with a similar shortcode that targets the group of posts you want, and then set that as your front page.

    You can fine tune things about how the portfolio shortcode displays things using the parameters described here.

    Note that this method will not include the slider your homepage has now.

    Let us know if you have trouble with either of these options :)

    Dear Chad1008,

    Thank you for your help.
    I definitely want the slider feature, however I don’t want all my projects featured on my homepage.

    Let me detail my predicament.
    I have created 4 parent projects – Cooking, Arts, Where to Next?, Lifestyle and Fitness. I then linked these to other projects, which then links to posts.

    What I want is the 4 main projects visible on my homepage.
    Then the option to go to the corresponding child page…

    For example.
    I go to my homepage. See “Where to next?” Click on the project, I then have the option to select the suburb, “CBD”, “Eastern”, “Southern” etc.
    I then see all the posts about restaurants in the CBD.

    Does that make sense?
    Please help.

    Thanks
    Eleanor

  • Howdy @eleanortabone,

    I think this CSS more or less accomplishes what you’re after, but it’s coded really specifically to work with your site as it is:

    /*Reset Default Clearing Behavior*/

    .project-navigation-wrapper .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n),
    .page-template-portfolio-page-php .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n),
    body[class*="jetpack-portfolio"].archive .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n) {
        clear: none;
        margin-right: auto;
    }
    .project-navigation-wrapper .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n+1),
    .page-template-portfolio-page-php .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n+1),
    body[class*="jetpack-portfolio"].archive .jetpack-portfolio:nth-of-type(3n+1) {
        clear: none;
    }
    /*Hide All Projects on home page*/

    .home .projects article {
        display: none;
    }
    /*Show only these projects on the home page*/

    .home .projects .post-2334,
    .home .projects .post-2336,
    .home .projects .post-2421,
    .home .projects .post-2545 {
        display: block;
    }
    /*Force Cooking to the bottom*/

    .home .projects .post-2334 {
        clear: left;
    }
    /*Remove right margin from Lifestyle & Fitness*/

    .home .projects .post-2336 {
        margin-right: 0;
    }
    /*Add right margin to Arts*/

    .home .projects .post-2421 {
        margin-right: 2%;
    }

    That CSS will keep all future projects that you add from showing below the slider, but leave the four you mentioned. I wouldn’t recommend trying to show more projects on the front of the site, however. On WordPress.com, there isn’t a way to automatically selectively remove certain projects and have the rest of them fill in the gaps in the layout.

    Achieving something like that would require a self-hosted version of this theme and some custom coding.

    Dear @dcoleonline,

    Thank you for your help!
    Except (and I apologise for the ignorance) I do not understand CSS.
    Is there the option to use CSS customisation with Sketch theme?

    Thank you for your help.

    Regards
    Eleanor
