Sketch – Responsive Site not Recognizing Mobile Phones
-
The site I’m working on, https://mattschichter.wordpress.com, responds nicely on a desktop. However, when I bring it up on a phone (I’ve tested iPhone and Samsung) or Google’s screen emulation, it does not respond and shows up as a smaller unreadable version of the site. Is there a way to fix this?

Sketch is a responsive layout theme https://wordpress.com/themes/sketch/
The mobile ready theme is a default theme and a completely different theme that you do not need to enable at all, if your theme is listed as a responsive layout theme here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/ Its’ provided for those who run older themes that aren’t the gold standard which is responsive layout.
A responsive layout theme adapts to different screen sizes so that your website will work (and be optimized for) iPhones, iPads, Android and other mobile devices. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.
When we use a responsive theme we disable the mobile theme. Go to > Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme
You can read more in the support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/mobile-themes/
You can test your site at this link https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

Hi there, do you still need any help with this? The site is looking fine to me on small screens, and the separate mobile theme is correctly disabled since Sketch is already responsive.

I do know to disable the mobile theme and how the responsiveness is supposed to work. Unfortunately, the site isn’t responding on any phone I’ve tried it on. It shrinks, but it doesn’t form two columns like it does when the desktop window is shrunken. Also, google’s screen emulation doesn’t show it forming two columns in a proper responsiveness way.

The responsive display on small devices like phones shifts the layout into a single column, as two columns wouldn’t be readable on a small screen like a phone. I also see a single column when making the browser window smaller.
Could you upload a screenshot of what you’re seeing when you shrink the browser window?
Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/You can upload the screenshot – in a graphic format like JPG, PNG, or PDF – in your Media Library so I can see it. Thanks.
-
Sure! I uploaded a screenshot from and iPhone and one from a Samsung into my media library.

Thanks for the screenshots! What you’re seeing on your phone is not what you’re supposed to see – it should be a single column. I’m going to investigate further why this is happening and keep you posted here.
In the meantime, I noticed you hid the footer credit with custom CSS – that’s not allowed on WordPress.com. All sites, including our VIP clients like CNN, TED, and Time must keep the footer credit present and readable. Please restore the credit and let me know when it’s done.

The problem is that you haven’t yet mapped your custom domain to your site; instead, you’re using a masked redirect through your domain registrar, which is breaking the theme’s responsiveness.
If you visit the site via https://mattschichter.com you’ll incorrectly see two columns (not responsive) on small devices.
Visiting the site via https://mattschichter.wordpress.com/ displays the site correctly (responsively) on small devices.
The solution is to undo the masking at your domain registrar, and then map your domain through your WordPress.com account. Mapping is already included in your Premium plan so there’s no extra charge.
Here are the instructions:
