Sketch Slider Not Working

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having trouble activating the slider for the Sketch theme. I followed the instructions and did the following:

    – Went to dashboard Appearances -> Customize -> Featured Content.
    – Addded a tag (in this case “Slider”)
    – Went to a specific post, inputted “Slider” as the tag, and under “Featured Image” at the bottom right corner, chose the same exact photo.

Is there something that I’m not doing? Thank you in advance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Went to a specific post, inputted “Slider” as the tag,

    Good.

…and under “Featured Image” at the bottom right corner, chose the same exact photo.

    Exact same as what?

I think you might have to add two or more posts with the featured content tags in order for the slider to display with the Sketch theme.

https://nickalew.wordpress.com/ presently has the Rubric theme activated. Do you still want help regarding the Sketch theme slider?

  • If you do still need help, make sure that your featured images on the slider posts are at least 960px wide.

Let us know how it goes.

Sorry about that, the blog I need assistance with is https://nicklewphotography.wordpress.com/

    Exact same as what?

In the post it asks which photo I would like to assign as a “featured image” and I choose and select the same image that is in the post.

I think you might have to add two or more posts with the featured content tags in order for the slider to display with the Sketch theme.

I added the featured content tags to three posts, still not working

If you do still need help, make sure that your featured images on the slider posts are at least 960px wide.

    Each image is 1000px wide

Have you set the page template to Portfolio Page Template as explained here:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/sketch/#portfolio-page-template

  • chaitanyamsv hit the nail on the head. Currently your front page is displaying your latest posts. In order to get your site looking like the demo, with the slider on top and portfolio below, you need to follow the steps in the “Portfolio Page Template” section on the Sketch info page, which he linked to just above.

Also take note that the recommended image size for featured images in the slider is 1092px.

Let us know if you get stuck at any point.

I’m having the same problem, it doesn’t look like @nickalew got his to work either? I’ve done everything I think I’m supposed to. I created a tag, tagged multiple posts, and added featured images. Set home page as portfolio template and my images are large enough. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you!

  • Hi Kailamo – it looks like you have some negative margin in your page content that’s preventing your slider from displaying. Could you try removing this within your page editor? You may need to flip to HTML/Text view to see it.

    <p style="width: 100%; height: 450px; margin-top: -525px; color: #ffffff; background-color: #ffffff; border: 1px solid #ffffff; position: relative; z-index: 1;"><a href="https://kartsie.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/img_55261.jpg">
    </a><a href="https://kartsie.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/img_55751.jpg">
    </a></p>

As soon as I removed that code in a browser inspector your slider appeared normal, here’s a screenshot:

Thank you so much, that worked! One more quick question, on the screenshot you sent, is there a way to make the menu listed out on the top like that rather than where you have to click menu? Thanks so much for your help!

Great! The slider looks lovely. :)

Sketch displays a full menu at screen sizes 1280px or wider. On screens smaller than that, the menu toggle icon appears in its place, which you can click to display a full menu.

I’ve gotten the slider to work at the top of the page, but cannot get my recent posts to start showing up beneath the slider. I see that I can set a “Posts Page”, but wouldn’t this just be a single page, and not all the posts that I previously had posted?

  • @nickalew

What is your site address please?

  • I’ve gotten the slider to work at the top of the page, but cannot get my recent posts to start showing up beneath the slider.

Hi nickalew – Sketch’s Portfolio Page template doesn’t work this way. When you assign that template to the front page, you get an optional slider, followed by optional homepage content, and then optional portfolio projects beneath that.

One workaround I can think of is to use the display posts shortcode in the homepage content area.

Let me know how it goes.

Hey kathrynwp, thanks for the tip. I’m not sure if I’m following the directions in the link correctly, but what I did was:

    1. Created a page (in my case I called it “Posts”)
    2. I put [display-posts tag="postit" posts_per_page="20"] in the text portion of the page, and saved the page.
    3. I went into one of my posts, and tagged it “postit”, as dictated by the code I put in the page that was previously made.
    4. I went into Settings > Reading, and under “Front page displays > Posts page”, I set it to the page I made earlier (called “Posts”)
    5. I did a hard refresh of the blog, and the posts are still not showing up.

    Am I doing this wrong?

Again, the url of my site is: https://nicklewphotography.wordpress.com/

    Thanks in advance

    @ nickalew,

Your front page is presently displaying a static page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned. The slider is working fine, but there is no page content, and there are no published portfolio projects to display. The content area of the static front page is where kathrynwp suggested you place the display posts shortcode.

    Here’s your posts page: https://nicklewphotography.wordpress.com/posts/.

  • This is the page which is currently assigned to your front page, so this is the page on which you’d need to add the shortcode:

    https://wordpress.com/page/69044004/235/

Try adding the shortcode to this page and let me know how it goes.

I added the code [display-posts tag="postit" posts_per_page="20"] to the page that you linked, and it still doesn’t seem like it’s working…

    @ nickalew,

    …and it still doesn’t seem like it’s working…

Since the site only has one post with a “postit” tag, the display posts shortcode you used should display just the title link to that one post. Is that what it displays?
