[Sketch Theme] Enabling post slider and column question

    Hi all,

I tried looking through the Theme showcase page, but I still haven’t figured out how to enable the post slider for the portfolio page. Some of my projects are wider than 1272px for sure and they are all set as featured image. Do I need to download some plugin?

Also listed on my portfolio page, my projects are arranged in a column of 3 and then a column of 2. Is there some way I can make it so it is columns of 3 in each row? It looks weirdly off-balanced at the moment.

    Many thanks!

  • Hi there. To activate the post slider you have to both assign a featured image AND assign the featured tag to posts and projects you want to appear. You can set up the featured tag under Appearance ->Customize ->Featured Content in the dashboard. No download necessary and it’s anyway not possible to install any plugins on WordPress.com.

How many projects do you have? If you only have five projects the page can only display five projects. You can set the maximum number of projects to display under Settings ->Writing in the dashboard.

In case you also want to make the portfolio page your home page, see here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    Hi kokkieh,

I included “featured” in the post tag and the project tag for my larger size images. I also typed in “featured” as the tag name under appearance -> customize -> featured content, but the post slider is still not appearing.

I have more than 5 projects. What happens is that there is a button that says “older projects”, but they are all still arranged in columns of 2 instead of even columns of 3.

  • I have no idea why the slider won’t appear if you’ve met the conditions. I’ll tag this for staff to follow up, in case we’re missing something. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

As for the number of projects displayed, please check that your blog is set to display more than five projects under Settings ->Writing. If it is set for more than five, let us know.

I played around with it again, and the slider appears if I set my front page as static to my portfolio page.

However, I wanted to keep my front page as my latest posts and have a separate Portfolio page where I wanted the slider to appear.
    Is that not possible?

Any page that you enable the Portfolio Page Template on will have the post slider. Here’s some info on setting up your portfolio pages:

Just make sure the images you include are at least 1272px wide. :)

Hello – a friend is having this same problem, and maybe a solution.

She has Portfolio Page Template on the page she’s set as static front page. The front page displays her portfolio. Great. But no slider.

She has also created a post with a Featured Image, and tagged that post “Slider.” Then she’s gone to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, and saved the tag “Slider.” Still no slider.

So then she tried adding a second post, also with a Featured Image, and also tagged that post “Slider.” VOILA! Now the slider appears. Perhaps there have to be at least two tagged items for the slider to activate?

    Hope this helps.

Usually if a post with the featured content tag doesn’t appear in the post slider it’s because the image isn’t large enough to be displayed.

However, I just did some testing with Sketch and you’re correct. There needs to be at least two featured items to display the slider. Thanks for chiming in. :)
