"Sketch" theme issues

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve installed the theme called SKETCH, but once it’s installed, the page is a basic blog looking page, instead of the lovely grid view on the preview, any idea how to fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • The Sketch setup guide explains how to set up Sketch to look more like the demo:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/sketch/

The basic steps are to set your front page to a static homepage rather than your latest posts, assign the Portfolio template to it, and start adding portfolio projects with featured images.

Is it possible to use the ‘portfolio’ as a blog?

I run a record label, and want each blog post to be a new releases’ artwork, or upcoming events artwork etc.

Simple really, but I am no expert on wordpress!

  • You can use the portfolio that way, sure.

Two of the key differences between portfolio projects and blog posts to keep in mind are:

    • Visitors can subscribe to blog posts and get updates by email or see them in the WordPress.com Reader. They cannot subscribe to portfolio projects.
    • Blog posts have the date automatically displayed on them (and in the URL), portfolio projects don’t.

If you prefer to use a blog, you might like a theme that displays blog posts in a grid, like how Sketch displays portfolio projects. Some good ones are Cubic and Pictorico but there are many others.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Dear Kathryn,

is there any way to remove the slider on the static front page?

This is my blog and I love the portfolio thumbnails that the Sketch theme shows on the front page. Any chance to get rid of the slider?

This is my blog so far: https://thompsonsorganic.wordpress.com
    Thank you already…

    Best, Rena

… or – is there a way to set the slider to one static picture? I would like to have one header instead of changing pictures (but I need the thumbnails on the front page.)

    Thank you!

    @enilenie,

Since, on the Sketch theme, the featured content slider only appears on a page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned to it, when there is featured content tag set at Customize > Featured Content, and that same tag is assigned to selected projects, posts, and pages, then the slider will not appear if any of those three conditions is not met.

That is, the slider will not display if you take any of the following three actions:
    1. Change the page template of the static front page to one of the other two options (not Portfolio Page Template).
    2. Remove the featured content tag at Customize > Featured Content > Tag name.
    3. Remove the featured content tag from the items presently displayed in the featured content slider.

If you remove the featured content slider by taking any of the three actions listed above, and a site header image is set, then the header image will display instead of the slider.

The site header will also appear on all static pages not assigned the Portfolio Page Template, as well as on the blog and archives pages, and on single posts.

The fact that it appears on all static pages without the Portfolio Pagte Template assigned leads to another option you might want to consider. Since the Portfolio Page Template may be assigned to any static page, you may display the featured content slider somewhere other than the front page, and display a single site header on the static front page.

    Thank you, Musicdoc1.
But I’m not sure if the things you point out are what I was looking for. I do want to keep the featured portfolio pictures on my static front page (which means I have to stick to the Portfolio Page Template for my front page) but not the slider.

As soon as I make the changes you suggest the slider disappears but also the featured thumbnail pictures of my portfolio that I want to keep there. So what I am looking for is a static page header followed by 8 to 10 featured portfolio pictures (and not the slider inbetween these two).

    Any chance to fix this?

Yes, you may remove the featured content slider and still display the portfolio projects on the static front page. The simplest way would be to just remove the featured content tag at Customize > Featured Content > Tag name, while keeping the portfolio page template assigned to the static front page. If you do this and have a site header image set, then the header image will display instead of the slider, and the portfolio will display below it.
