sketch theme menu icon has gone
-
Hi. I changed my theme to ‘sketch’ recently, and up until today the menu was hidden behind a little icon which opened up, when clicked on, to show the menu pages.
This has now disappeared, and the menu pages sit in a heap at the top right of the page. What happened to the icon, and how can I get it back?
Looking at the theme description now on the WP page, I see that there is no menu icon shown. How strange then, that it was displaying on my site for days! (To my great pleasure, I might add.)
I also notice that the links to 4 “awesome blogs using this theme”, which I found so helpful in making my choice, have disappeared.
What’s up guys?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Whether a three-bar icon opens your menu, or it displays horizontally is dependent upon aspects and settings of the device used by the viewer.

Thank you @musicdoc1.
I’m viewing on my laptop and have changed no “aspects and settings” from what they were when the three-bar icon was displaying…
Exactly where would one change these settings? (On a Mac.)

@ unlitlight or wonderingmindstudio,
I was hoping you wouldn’t ask that. “Aspects” was shorthand for screen size and display aspect ratio. “Settings” includes screen resolution settings*, and browser zoom settings. With some themes, any or all of these can have an effect on which type of navigation menu displays.
That means that with the Sketch theme, and some other themes, you are not in control of which type of header navigation menu your visitor will see. I’m not sure why the menu changed for you, but I strongly suspect that you changed one of the variables I’ve mentioned above.
* Found at the Display Properties dialog box > Settings in Windows XP and (I think) Windows 7.

@musicdoc1 – you are kind to respond.
I can assure you that I am familiar with display aspect ratios and screen resolution settings, and have changed nothing in that zone of variables.
What’s deeply interesting – and tickles me pink – is that tonight when I open the site, the sweet little three-line icon is sitting up there smiling, as though as to assure me that I have not fallen down Alice’s rabbit hole.
I am of ancient years, but my marbles still serve me well. I guess I’ll get used to the WP “now-you-see-it now-you-don’t” game.
As they say here downunder – “No worries!” :-)

Glad things are back to normal!
Just to clarify, Sketch displays the menu icon at screen sizes of 1280px or below. At larger resolutions, the full menu is displayed instead.

@ wonderingmindstudio,
…any or all of these can have an effect on which type of navigation menu displays.
I should have said “will or might” have an affect on which type of menu is displayed.
Factors and effect:
1. Screen size — above 1280px width > menu icon; below 1280px > full menu, as clarified by kathrynwp above.2. Display Aspect Ratio — This might have an effect indirectly since a monitor with 16:9 aspect ratio would tend to be wider than one with 4:3 ratio, and is therefore more likely to equal or exceed 1280px. My 4:3 monitor has a maximum of 1024 X 768 screen resolution.
3. Screen Resolution — Even if your screen size exceeds 1280px, you could set the screen resolution to a smaller width, which might have an effect on which menu displays.
4. Zoom Settings — On my setup (12″ X 9″ screen, 1024 X 768 pixels), at default zoom settings I see the icon menu on your site. It can be changed to the horizontal menu with three zoom clicks out.

@kathrynwp and @musicdoc1 – thank you so much.
(I’ve copied your “Factors and effect” into my WP notebook – it’s very helpful.)
Loving the learning curve…
