Sketch Theme – Portfolio Can't be a Parent?

I’ve been testing the Illustratr theme recently and one of the striking things I discovered was that the “Portfolio” extension on the website URL displays a portfolio of published projects even when no page with the slug “portfolio” in the permalink exists. It won’t be found in your “All Pages” index and so it can’t be a parent of anything. It’s a ghost page.
I just switch the theme on my test site from Illustratr theme to Sketch. The portfolio extension on the website URL (example: http://illustratorandkin.wordpress.com/portfolio/), does the same thing, except that the ghost page is titled Portfolio rather than Projects as it is with the Illustratr.
Note also that in each case it is irrelevant whether a page with the slug “portfolio” is actually created! If you create such a page http://illustratorandkin.wordpress.com/portfolio/ displays the same thing as it does if you don’t create the page. Additionally, if you do create the page then any modifications you make to it: title, content, featured image will have any effect on what is displayed. It is truly a ghost page which materializes only to display projects.

I should have tested this specifically before reporting. Was able to reproduce the effect you describe, I think. With the Illustratr theme, I made the Portfolio page (permalink slug = portfolio) a parent of several other pages. The hierarchy displayed in a footer area Pages widget. With the Sketch theme the hierarchy did not display in the sidebar Pages widget. Instead, all pages appear as if they have no parent.
Of course, in each case you can create a hierarchy with the Portfolio page as parent in custom menus, because the relationships created there are independent to the Page Attributes relationships.

And, more specifically, when I would make the Portfolio a Parent, the page that was the “child” (if you will), would not even be recognized as a working page. I had a “chat” with WP Help earlier today and even that person was puzzled. I do believe it’s a bug and I hope they address it.

If you have already used live chat then posting here is a duplication that will not serve you well. Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in order of datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.
How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.
As your chat with Staff was posted before this thread posting here means you have created a datestamp and timestamp that are ahead of the chat thread (support ticket) date and time, so that means it will take longer to get help because you are, in essence, starting from now.
