SKETCH THEME – portfolio images not showing
-
I’ve started setting up a website using the Sketch theme.
I’ve added portfolio items and given each a featured image. These all appear when the portfolio page is selected. However when i select one of the portfolio images/items the text opens but there isn’t an image.
Additionally on the demo site the the header image disappears when in the portfolio section – but this isn’t happening on my site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there.
However when i select one of the portfolio images/items the text opens but there isn’t an image.
You have to add the image to the project itself as well. Simply having it as a featured image only has it display on the portfolio page, not on the project itself.
Additionally on the demo site the the header image disappears when in the portfolio section – but this isn’t happening on my site.
The Sketch demo site doesn’t have a custom header at all. What you see on the home page there is a featured post slider. You get that by adding the featured content tag to specific posts and portfolio projects you want to appear there. You can specify the featured content tag under Appearance ->Customize -> Featured Content in the dashboard.
If you upload a custom header to Sketch it will appear on every page, but will be hidden on the portfolio page if the slider is active.

Thank you for your helpful advice. I’ll add images in to each portfolio item.
I think I under stand your reply about the header image. But not how to activate it. I’ve found the Featured content in the dashboard – but am not clear what I do next…
-
To activate the slider, insert a tag of your choice in the featured content area of the Customizer. Most people go with “featured” but you can really make it anything you want. (Remember to save before leaving the Customizer.)
Then you add that exact tag to any post or project that you want to appear in the slider. Please note that the post or project must also have a featured image, or it won’t display in the slider. You can tag up to ten posts or projects to display in the slider and can change them as often as you want simply be removing the tag from one and adding it to another.
You must also be aware that the slider will only appear on the home page using the Portfolio Page Template. On individual project pages, and on any other page, post or feed on your blog, the custom header will still display.
The only way to prevent that, apart from removing the custom header completely, would be to override the theme’s settings by adding custom CSS, and you’ll need the custom design upgrade to do that.
You can post directly in the CSS customisation forum for info on what code will be needed to hide the header on specific pages: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform
See here for more info on purchasing the custom design upgrade:

That’s great thank you. I’ve got the slider feature working. The header image is still appearing on all other pages though except portfolio page (which is also set to be the home page). Is that meant to happen?
I’ve another question this time in connection to the blog entries. When the blog is selected from the main menu it shows all the blogs (as I would expect), but it is also showing all the text entered on each blog too – making it a very long way to scroll. Is there any way of only having the first bit of text appear? O just the images? Or the excerpt?

Yes, that’s how the theme works. As indicated above, you might be able to override it using CSS, but otherwise the header will always appear.

Yes, you can control the amount of content shown on the blog page by adding the more-tag to your posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
If you want the image to display in the preview, just insert the more-tag after the image. The custom excerpt applies to RSS feeds. Some themes also display them on the blog page, but Sketch doesn’t do that.
Be careful when inserting the more-tag that you don’t include it inside other html tags. Always insert it on its own line and make sure you don’t have bold, italic, alignment, or any other type of formatting active in the line where you add it. See here for more information: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2008/08/21/avoiding-the-more-tag-woes/

Thank you again for your help. i’ll have a fiddle with the ‘more’ bit. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like a workable solution as i’m testing this theme out as one to use for a large number of students, and adding in code is a level I don’t want to get into.
I’ve just texted adding content to a post -and worryingly ‘all’ content appears in the scroll – so posts would become unmanageable very quickly. It looks like I need another theme.
-
You can add the more-tag with a single click of the appropriate icon in the visual editor toolbar. You’ll never have to edit the code itself unless posts start behaving erratically. And as long as you always make sure you insert the tag on its own line that shouldn’t happen.
Except for the handful of themes that use excerpts, all themes show entire posts in the main feed unless you insert the more-tag. Here is a list of themes that up to a year ago used automatic excerpts on the main feed, but I have no idea how up to date that list still is: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

I’m having trouble getting portfolio page to get the slider.
It is a pretty misleading thing to see on the Sketch theme page that we can get a post slider but that actually in truth, is only available to the portfolio page.
Why not just say so, to save all of us the time and effort of fiddling for ages trying to work out what this theme does and doesn’t do?
Also, I see many references, from the maker herself that all the instructions for the slider are on the theme page, when in fact they are not. I feel like she made the theme and rushed the directions and isn’t taking the time needed to truly show how to use the theme.I’ve tagged a couple of posts with “featured” and have this in my customiser as the key word. I also don’t know if I should tag in the post tags or portfolio tags..I see no reference for those instructions anywhere either. Any tips?

If you look very carefully at the demo site you’ll see that the slider only appears on the portfolio page there. It’s not explicitly stated, but it’s never shown on a posts page. It is able to display both posts and projects, though.
I agree that the slider instructions should probably be on the theme support doc, but it works pretty much the same across themes. For portfolio projects you assign the featured tag under the regular tags (you can choose whether or not it will display the tag under Featured Content in the customizer) and then also make sure that you have featured images assigned to that posts/projects. The featured images must be at least 1092 pixels wide to display in the slider.

Thank you again for all the help you have provided. The ‘more’ tag is very useful.
I’ve another question – this time relating to the format area in posts. it doesn’t appear to do anything no matter which of the options i select (Standard, Aside, Image, Video, quote, link). Is this correct for this theme?
-
The post formats make certain posts exhibit different behaviour, especially when they appear in feeds like your main posts page or the Reader. Here is the support document on post formats: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/ You can also look at this article on the Twenty-Eleven theme for more information exactly how the various post formats behave: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/workings-of-duster/
I haven’t tested the different post formats on Sketch (yet), but with some themes there are very little difference in appearance between the post formats, while in other themes they can differ quite significantly.

Thanks for the reply
RE Post Slider. It’s under features – “Post Slider” but really, it’s aportfolio page slider that can include other posts. I just wish, it said..the post slider only works on the portfolio page. Simple?
There’s only one good picture of a page that just happens to be the portfolio page, how are people to gather that the slider is exclusive to this page? http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sketch/
Sadly too, if your site title is two words like mine, it is split on different levels if you place a logo. -
Hi KOKKIEH
I followed all of your instructions but still, NO FEATURED SLIDER appears.
I made a page entitled MAIN and set it to PORTFOLIO PAGE TEMPLATE.
The featured photo’s width (in my blog post) is 1349pixels. The tag “FEATURED” is set in both the Customizer and the blog post but still, NO FEATURED SLIDER appears…
Am I missing out on something?

@tannedph
The most common reason I’ve noticed this happening is if the tag specified in the customizer and the actual tag assigned are not exactly the same, e.g. you specified the tag as “featured” but to the posts you assigned “feature”. Please check if that’s not perhaps the problem.I’ll also tag this for staff to follow up so they can check if there’s perhaps another problem. As far as I can tell you’re doing what you should.
Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when staff responds and be patient while waiting.

I’ve got another question relating to the Portfolio section. This is function as expected except that the Project Types are not appearing on the website. I was expecting them to work like the ‘Categories’ on the posts pages where I add a Widget to enable Categories to appear in the sidebar. However this isn’t working as there isn’t a Widget for ‘Project Types’. Can anyone explain hoe I get the Project Types to appear on the website so that Projects can be grouped by type?
-
@sgsmds
One way I know of to use the project types is via the portfolio shortcode. I don’t know if you can use it in a widget, but you can use it to display your projects on posts and pages. Among other things, you can configure the shortcode to only display projects of a certain type. See here for instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/Another possibility is to use a custom menu, then you’ll be able to create a menu link to a specific portfolio type – if people click on that menu link they’ll see all projects of that type. If you go to Appearance ->Menus, look for the Project Types option: expand that and select the type you want to add to the menu. Note you’ll have to create and publish projects and assign them a project type before you’ll be able to add them to the menu. If you don’t see the Project Types option, click on Screen Options and make sure it’s selected.
See here for more information on custom menus: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
