Sketch theme: Portfolios and front page help.

I’ve looked on the forum for all the threads related to my question, and they are either closed without an answer or don’t help me. I am very new to wordpress, so excuse me if this is a silly question.

My front page has a static portfolio page like they said on the Sketch theme page. After much confusion and about 5 hours of looking I got it to work, even though I don’t understand why it works exactly.

What I want to know is:
When you create a portfolio project, and give it a featured image, and tag the page…is that it? Is that the only way to get one image at a time to show on the front page?

Can’t you make one portfolio with a bunch of images that show up together on the front page?

When the image is on there, can you get it to link to a different page that you choose?

Could the same thing (front page image collage) be done with posts and not portfolio projects?

Lastly, isn’t there a really thorough walkthrough for this theme? I see the forum is littered with questions that all float around the same boat, more or less. Please don’t direct me to the Sketch theme page (https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sketch/) I know of it, and I have been there. I noticed that it’s been the go-to response here.

I realize I’m a noob, we all start somewhere, right?

    Thank you in advance.

PS: the images on my site are just placeholders, I realize they have funny edges and white borders, that is not the issue, they adhere to the pixel size indicated and have no effect on my question.

Hi, I just saw this so thought I’d try to help a little. What you are going to need is shortcodes to do what you’re asking, but let’s get back to that in a minute…
Before you even “go there” I really encourage you to subscribe to a couple of WP blogs because navigating the articles there has really helped me the most in terms of getting familiar with WordPress. Here they are:
    The Daily Post
And WP’s main blog Hot off the Press
Also I don’t know how new you are but if you didn’t start here you might want to go back to learn wordpress and just do it. I didn’t when I started and it wasn’t until I went back months later and learned a whole bunch I thought I wouldn’t – in the beginning you just don’t know what you need to know, so even though you’ll have to sit through what you do already know, there’s always something hidden in there that you need too.

As far as I know there is not a thorough or detailed video for the sketch theme. You could always go back to that themes support page and see if you can contact the theme developer from there – who would be the ideal person to ask if there is another site or video for this theme.

When creating the portfolio – you have to create projects to populate the portfolio. Projects are under Portfolio in your dashboard. If you want to create a portfolio page another way you can do that is to use shortcodes. Here is where WP Support discusses portfolios and in this page you will find a link to the portfolio shortcode – things are explained there, so follow that link once you read through that page.

    I hope this helps.

Welcome to WordPress… by the way the illustrations on your blog are quite fun. Good luck with your blog. Don’t worry, pretty soon you will love putting it all together.

Thank you so much for the reply :)

I’ll go through all the sources you linked to and subscribe. I’ll probably eventually get used to it.

I appreciate your advice a lot. You’re right about me not looking through Learn WordPress. I was so excited to get started I thought I could just figure it out step by step. It’s not quite that easy…I am super excited though.

Anyway, thanks and good luck with your endeavors as well.
