Sketch Theme – Recent posts on home page
-
I am using the sketch theme. I’m all set except that I’m having problem with the static and recent post options for the home page. When I select Static home page it works fine but I really want my blog posts to be the home page. So when I select Recent Posts as my option in the customizer, the blogs show on the home page but disappear from the Blog page accessed through the menu.
Also when I have switched between the Recent Posts and Static Page options by blogs disappear altogether off the website and I have to copy it and repost to get it to appear again.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please HELP…I just made a change to a couple of pages (not the blog posts) and when I updated the post dropped off the home page and I had to repost it for it to show up again.
I’m thinking there must be a bug in the theme…
So frustrated.

Now, I have tried adding another post and that one appeared but the first post disappeared. Now nothing is showing.

Hi,
When I select Static home page it works fine but I really want my blog posts to be the home page. So when I select Recent Posts as my option in the customizer, the blogs show on the home page but disappear from the Blog page accessed through the menu.
The front page must be set to display either the blog page or a static page, and the blog page can only appear once on a WordPress.com site. So if the front page is set as blog page, the blog (or latest posts) will no longer appear on the static page formerly assigned as the blog page.
There are themes that may include a limited amount of posts on a static front page, which may be included by default on a static front page, or only on a page assigned a certain page template, but Sketch is not one of them.
Sketch is one of the Portfolio Themes. Did you intend to display the portfolio on the front page, as well as posts? If so, then that can be done in a static front page with the Portfolio Page Template assigned to it by inserting Display Posts Shortcode into the page content.
You may use display posts shortcode to display posts on any post or page, including your static page titled “My Blog,” or in a text widget.

Thanks for your help. That makes sense…it just isn’t clear unless you are familiar with that type of theme. It all works fine if I use the static front page and I select any of the other pages.
I have now changed back to a static front page which shows everything ok.
What I was hoping to have happen was a particular image in the portfolio linked to a relevant post which if I understand you I can have happen by using the shortcode. I currently have one of the portfolio images (graduation box card) once clicked on it opens to a separate page with a link to the blog. This was the only way I could get it to link up. Does the display posts shortcode take away the need for this step.
I hope I’m making sense.

You’re welcome.
The items in the portfolio grid can only link to projects, not to posts. There might be some way of changing this behavior with Custom CSS.
I’m trying to think of a workaround. Perhaps the best option, for the Sketch theme, would be to include Display Posts Shortcode in the content of the static front page. A featured image can be included for each post displayed by the shortcode.
There are other themes that feature a grid-based or tiled format on the posts page, where each image in the grid or in the tile rows link to a corresponding individual post. However, I don’t recall offhand any themes that display both a portfolio grid and a post grid on the front page.
Does the display posts shortcode take away the need for this step.
It’s an alternative to that step, but it’ll be up to you to decide which you prefer.

This is the same option I suggested in my previous post.

If you only want to link only one image on your portfolio front page to a post, here’s a workaround that I thought of.
- 1. Add the image to the content of the static front page with the portfolio page template assigned.
- 2. Include (type or paste) the title of the corresponding post into the page content, above or below the image.
- 3. Create an image link, linking the image to the post, and
- 4. Create a text link, linking the title to the post.
This image link would appear above the portfolio grid, not within in the grid. If you want to avoid duplication, you could remove the corresponding project from the portfolio.

I tried adding this to the portfolio page just as a simple starting point.
[display-posts tag="advanced" posts_per_page="20"]
Didn’t seem to work. I’m not at all confident about shortcodes.
The theme has [portfolio] option but only to insert a project into a post or page. Once you create a project, you can use the portfolio shortcode to display it anywhere on your site. I think it does not do the opposite of inserting a post into a portfolio page. I’m not sure that the theme allows this anyway.
If I can’t get the display post shortcode working and I go back to having recent posts as my frontpage, the blog page still shows in the menu but obviously a blank page when selected. Would I just delete that page to stop it showing in the main menu.
-
The reason the shortcode example you tried didn’t work is because it is limited by the tag=”advanced” argument. It will only display posts with the “advanced” tag added to them.

You could change it to draft status if you think you might use that page later. If you’re displaying a custom menu, then you’d have to remove the item from the menu as well.

Oh gee I’m a bit thick on this stuff. Ok..I have added the tag advanced to the post.
It hasn’t worked…
I note in the link you gave me on display posts it says ‘New posts will be displayed within one hour of publishing’.
-
It has just appeared on my portfolio now. Just teh heading of the post but I assume I can changed the attributes to show more e.g. a photo, more of the blog???
Yay…getting there!
-
Woohoo…I’ve cracked it. I’ve added a image and the excerpt. I’ll keep tweeking it. Thanks so much for all your help. You are brilliant.

Yep just run into another one!!!
I notice that all my pages show my main logo (this is set in the Header section) except for the Portfolio Page (the header section has the slider in it).
Do you have any tricks that could let me put my logo somewhere. Maybe I could just add it to the slider but I don’t want it to appear in the portfolio gallery. Any thoughts.
-
I see your logo on the homepage, at the top left, above the slider and the portfolio, and on the Portfolio page, https://tinwhistlecrafts.wordpress.com/portfolio/. Where is it missing from?
The bullets in your portfolio on the front page can be removed, if you like, by inserting the code wrapper=”div” into the shortcode. The wrapper options are given at Arguments > wrapper, in the Display Posts Shortcode support page.
-
Correction:
Sorry, not in your portfolio. There’s a so-called “bullet,” or large dot, beside your featured image on the post displayed with the displayed posts shortcode. To remove that, add wrapper=”div” to the shortcode.
