Sketch Theme to look like demo?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello. I’ve tried to make my site look just like the Sketch demo, but struggling with some last bits!

    I’d like the menu to be just words across the top, instead of a drop down on the right. How would I edit this? I looked under customise but it just seemed to let me put an image in the header and nothing else.

    Also, I don’t want the word “HOMEPAGE” on the homepage – the only way to remove this is to remove it from the title of the page, but I wanted to keep it there for reference! Is there another way?

    Finally, I don’t want the double lines with text box in between, I’d just like it to be my logo on the left, with menu titles to the right, then the portfolio images start (like on the demo).

    If someone could help with any of these I would really appreciate, as been going round in circles!

    :)

  • Hi @jenniferledgerdesign!

    Looking at your site, it appears you’ve already sorted this out by applying the Portfolio Page Template to your site’s front page – did you still need a hand with anything?

    Not sure if Jennifer will respond back, but I would like help with the same menu issue. I checked her site, and all I get is the collapsed menu.

    Additionally, when I click one of my illustrations, the larger version does not show. And how do you add multiple images (Jennifer’s first project shows more than one in a grid layout)

    Lastly, I can’t get the social menu to work.

    Thanks in advance!

    @jenniferledgerdesign,

    I’d like the menu to be just words across the top, instead of a drop down on the right. How would I edit this?

    The type of menu that displays on a site with the Sketch theme activated is dependent upon the screen width and orientation of the device on which the site is viewed, as well as browser zoom settings.

    On my desktop PC, with screen resolution 1280 x 1024 (5:4 display aspect ratio), using Firefox 50.1.0 at normal zoom settings, the menu is hidden behind a three-bar icon. However, one zoom click out results in the menu displayed unhidden and horizontally, as it might display on a wider screen.

    Also, I don’t want the word “HOMEPAGE” on the homepage

    As staff-loquaciousloon suggests, the other two issues you’ve described were evidently resolved by
    1. assigning the Portfolio Page Template to the page, and
    2. placing a check in the box labeled “Hide title and content on Portfolio Page Template,” at Customize > Portfolio.

    @trbarrett,

    I checked her site, and all I get is the collapsed menu.

    See my explanation above of why the three-bar icon or “collapsed menu” might display instead of a horizontal menu depending upon the screen width, orientation, and browser settings of the device viewing the page.

    Additionally, when I click one of my illustrations, the larger version does not show.

    Clicking on the featured image representing a portfolio project or on its title on the front page brings you to the project page. The project page does not display the featured image (above the title). It displays the content of the project (below the title).

    And how do you add multiple images (Jennifer’s first project shows more than one in a grid layout)

    That’s a gallery. See the Galleries and Slideshows support page.

    Lastly, I can’t get the social menu to work.

    Have you followed the instructions in the Social Links section of the Sketch theme guide? See the Add a Social Links Menu for more detailed information and instructions.

    @musicdoc1

    Is there a way to override the menu default style with CSS? I would rather it go across as I feel that is more user friendly when on a desktop computer.

    Also, for some reason, I get an error when I try to add links to my social menu:

    “Sorry, this menu item is unsupported and I can’t edit it.”

    I have tried everything, and recreated the menu twice with no luck.

    Thanks!

    ok, so I got the social menu working. Not sure what I did…

    and it appears that with the free plan you can add your own CSS, so disregard the other question.

    I’d suggest you ask chad1008 about that.

    You can add inline CSS, but you’ll need Custom CSS (available only on paid plans) to modify the behavior of the menu, if it’s possible.

    Sorry @musicdoc1. I meant to say “can’t add your own CSS” on free plans

    And I decided that the menu on the Sketch theme was a deal breaker, so I switched themes.

    Thanks for your responses!
