Hi,
I am trying to use the Skylark theme to create a portfolio, I want the home page to have my projects shown with a picture and title.
The portfolio page in the Skylark demo confusingly bears the title portfolio, when it is not what WordPress.com normally refers to as a Portfolio. Rather, it is a static page with the Portfolio Template assigned to it. Also, in order to make it appear, certain qualifying specs have to be satisfied. The Skylark demo page titled “Portfolio” says:
This portfolio template will show up to 24 of your latest posts that have the image, gallery, or video post format and a featured image.
It fails to work if the post format is left on the default “Standard” setting.
A static page with the portfolio template could be used on the homepage, but if it is set as the static front page (homepage), then the features of the Showcase Page template, as displayed in the theme guide and on the homepage of the demo will of course then not be displayed on the front page. A page can’t have both templates assigned, or features of both templates present, at the same time.
Second,
I am not sure how to put the posts on the main page of my blog like the sample portfolio here: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/skylark/ for an example
See the Featured Categories section of the Skylark theme guide for instructions. The Skylark demo just displays the most recent four posts in the “Latest Work” and “News” categories. Despite the description “A collection of our most recent projects” under the title “Latest Work,” these are not portfolio project. They are posts with the “Latest Work” category assigned.
From the Skylark theme guide’s Featured Categories section:
Choose a primary featured category in Appearance → Theme Options. To feature additional categories, go to Posts → Categories and assign your primary category as the “Category parent” of each additional category you wish to feature.

If instead of a Portfolio Template page that displays posts, as is the case with the demo’s “Portfolio” page, you want to display a real WordPress.com Portfolio, the first step would be to enable portfolio content type at Writing Settings as described at the top of the Portfolios support page.
