Slider
-
I’ve created a slider on my wordpress website http://www.blogyourniches.com.
It’s private at the moment.
The slider works fine but displays the first slide as an image at the top of the page.
I’d like to show only the slider on that page.
Is this possible? How can I change it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

HI there,
Are you speaking of https://blogyourniches.com/2020/05/22/popular-home-tutor-apps/?
I don’t see any images from your slideshow displaying elsewhere on the page. Did you manage to figure this out?
If not, please take a screen shot of what you see and upload it to the media library. I’ll be able to see it there.
-
Thanks kokkieh,
Yes I did manage to figure it out. I disabled featured image.
However I would like to facilitate the user clicking on any slide so that it opens up larger in a new tab.
Also any way the user can jump to a particular slide?
-
Opening the full size image isn’t possible with the image slideshow, no. We have a gallery carousel where clicking an image opens a full-screen carousel of all images in a gallery, but for that you’ll need to select one of the other gallery formats instead of the slideshow.
There’s no way to link directly to a specific slide.
-
Thanks kokkieh
I think carousel requires a plugin? Is it available with the personal plan?
Also in carousel I don’t think I will be able to give the user control with pause, right, and left arrow buttons will I?
-
No, you do not need a plugin. You will want to choose any gallery block and set the images to link to
Media file:https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/#linking
You wouldn’t see the Pause or Play button because it is not a slideshow, the user will need to navigate between the images manually clicking on the next/previous arrows.
-
Thanks! I’ll give ti a try and get back if I have more questions.
When you say gallery block do you mean block editor? I prefer using the classic editor. Will that work?
-
Ah yes, sorry, I was talking about the Block Editor as it’s the one that will give you more options to customize how you want to display the images:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/
You can also link the images to display Media file in the Classic Editor though.
-
Thanks but I’m not comfortable using the block editor. I think I’ll leave it as it is – at least for now – rather than experimenting and landing up in a mess.
One thing though, You said link images to Media file.
Could you explain what it means to link to media file and/or attachment page?
I’m a bit confused about that.Thanks.
-
When you add an image to a post, click that image, and you’ll be able to edit a variety of settings, including what it links to.
-
Thanks macmanx
But that’s not quite what I meant to ask.
I was talking about a slide show.
It has 2 options for link to – Attachment to page and Media file.
I’d like to understand the difference between the two.
Incidentally, my slide show preview is taking too long to load in edit mode. I used to load quickly before. Is there a problem?
It’s working fine in live mode – just the editing that seems to be problematic.
Here’s the link –

Those options are not relevant to slideshows. With a slideshow there’s no way to open a larger version of an image, so that setting doesn’t do anything when applied to images in a slideshow.
With a gallery, if you have the carousel feature disabled (which you currently have at https://bricabrac892.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-media.php), it will open the image attachment page, or if you enable the carousel it will open the carousel view of the image. So there this setting also has no effect.
That setting only applies to single images. Media file links directly to the actual file in your media library, e.g. https://bricabrac892.files.wordpress.com/2018/01/notebook-question-are-you-ready-600w-1013125333.jpg
Attachment page links to a special page the WordPress software creates automatically for any file you upload to the media library, e.g. https://blogyourniches.com/2018/01/01/exam-phobia-a-new-perspective/notebook-question-are-you-ready-600w-1013125333/

See if clearing your browser cache makes any difference. I don’t see any slowness on my end loading the preview from the editor.

Ok. This sounds good.
So I would like to use selected images to create a carousel – not all images in my gallery. I would like to use this in a post so there would be other content too besides the carousel.
Could you please guide me how to –
1. Enable carousel
2. Select Images for a carousel
3. Create the carousel
4. Resize the carousel to fit into the page / post
5. When a user clicks on an image it opens in a new pageThanks.

That is not possible.
The images that appear in the carousel depends on what images are added to a particular gallery. There’s no way to add images in a gallery but exclude them from the carousel.
-
Ohk.
So can I assign images to specific pages / posts? Like maybe a gallery for a particular post?
Is that what is meant by link to attachment page? -
Hi there,
Yes, you can make a gallery for each specific post.
link to attachment pagemeans that is not the page in which the image appears: it’s a new, separate page containing just that single the image. -
-
For instructions on how to add a gallery to a post or page, you can follow the step by step instructions here:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/#adding-a-gallery-or-slideshow
Please take a look and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

Ok. Thanks. I tried this but the images are not scrolling in a carousel. They just display in the selected style and when I click on a particular image it opens up in a new page/tab.
BTW I am using the classic editor. I don’t want to switch to the block editor as I am not comfortable using it.
What I’d like to do is create a scroll of images with option for the user to stop the scroll and zoom in on one image if he wishes.
One more question – Can I increase the size of the slide show that I have on the page Popular Home Tutor Apps?
Thanks everyone for your patience.
