The answer is by following the instructions provided on the theme description page to the letter. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/forever/

See “A Dramatic Personalized Home Page”. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/forever/
You need sticky posts with featured images for the slider to display.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-postsFeatured Image (at least 887 pixels wide and height 355px)
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/featured-images/Setting a Featured Image http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image
Open the editor of the post or page and locate the Featured Image module in the bottom right corner under Page Attributes. Click Choose a Featured Image. If you don’t see the Featured Image module on your Add New or Edit Post page, please make sure you’ve selected Featured Image in your Screen Options. http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options
To show only your four latest posts (with a Featured Image above each one, of course) in a neat grid on your home page visit Appearance → Theme Options and click the checkbox there. Thumbnail on 4-column showcase for recent posts. Width 195px, maximum height 124px (cropped if larger).

I put the picture as “sticky” but its not the main heading page. its in 2 columns next to the meta and archives.
I want the sticky slider image to be under the home tab as a big header image. Also, how can i remove meta and archives. I removed them from the widgets but they are still there.
