  anyway to get rid of the permalink, and just click thru the images?

  No I’m sorry there isn’t. It’s the posts that are being featured by use of featured images and not the other way around, so naturally there is a link to the featured posts. However, nothing prevents any of us from simply placing our mouse on the image and clicking “view image”.

  or, is there a better theme where i could have an image slider that had nothing to do with any posts? basically an image in a header that one could click thru for multiple images

  No. Please undestand that we cannot edit templates or themes and css editing cannot be used to change functionality.
