Sliders

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi – I’m trying to put a banner on the front page of my site which has different photos that change by clicking the arrows. Are these called sliders and if so how do I go about installing this?

  • Hello @nettybruce,

As it’s stated on this old thread, the Sundance theme you’ve picked features the video slider instead of the ‘regular’ photo slider.

As you can read on the linked thread, although it’s somehow possible to turn the video slide into a photo slide, it’s a lot of effort!
So what I’d suggest you is to try another theme.
Here is a list of specific themes that feature the post slider option.
Have a look at them and see if there’s anything that fancy you.

If you’re stuck at any step, or have any questions, just let me know and I’ll be glad to help.
    Cheers!

Thanks very much for your help. Is there any way to talk to someone at WordPress or are forums or emails the only way?

  • You’re welcome!

Yes, basically all the WordPress support is provided through this forum (and some of the people replying are fellow volunteers as well as Staff members), email and live chat.

Ok thanks again! So Ive updated the theme but don’t know how to set up the different photos now in my slider? And can I add a ‘breaking news’ section on the homepage or is that not possible?

  • Hi there!

I see you’ve loaded the Twenty Eleven theme. This one has the feature of having random header images throughout your website, but not slides. The difference between changing headers and slides is that slides lead to a blog post page once clicked, while changing headers allow you to have different headers every time a page/post is refreshed or a reader goes in another post/page. I hope this is clear for you.
I can help you set different Header images if you want :)

As for the breaking news option, I’m not sure what you mean with that. You can either set your homepage as a blog post flow, so to display your latest content as the first thing a reader sees once lands on your website, or create a widget on your sidebar or footer where to list all your latest content.
Does this make sense to you or didi you mean something different?

Thanks again for your help with this. I don’t fully understand what you mean and would find it easier to talk to someone but no worries.
I want the front page of the site to look like this http://www.livelearn.org/ (the slider example) – which wordpress theme might be close to this? Even if I have to pay for it can you recommend one?

  • Hello @nettybruce,

I’ve found a selection of themes for you that feature sliders: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/
There are both free and premium themes there, so you can browse and choose the one you fancy the most :)

I don’t know which part of my previous comment you didn’t understand, and I’m happy to explain that to you if you want. However, if you want to speak with someone else you can either wait for someone else of the forum to have a look at this thread or tag the topic for staff attention by putting the modlook tag.

Oh great! Thanks so much. Really appreciate it. No that’s ok – you have been very helpful. I just need to get my head around all the terminology and be in the headspace to understand the difference between header images and slides and what a widget is etc. I guess just by trialling all this it will become clearer how the pages interrelate. Thanks again for your help. I’ll check out the sliders templates now. One more questions – is there an easy way to revert back to your old them if you update it to one that you then decide you don’t like? If so how do I go about doing that?

  • @nettybruce,

You’re very welcome. Glad to hear you’re getting more confidence the way WordPress works :)

As for your last question, the easiest way is from your Dashboard to go on Appearance>Themes and then select the old one you had by browsing it – you can use the search box if you can’t spot it straight away.

All the elements and content on the pages and on the layout that you’ve been editing or moving will sit on the old/new theme according to the theme general layout.

So say, for instance, you create a new footer widget on the new theme and then you go back to the old theme, if the old theme features footer widgets, you’re going to see it there on the footer as well.

That has been thought to make sure that everything you do on your website can’t be lost in the process of experimenting new themes and layouts. If something that you put on the new theme doesn’t fancy you on the old theme, you can just remove it :)

I hope this is clear – if not, don’t hesitate to ask for more details. As usual I’m happy to help :)

    Cheers!

Thanks! And what if you can’t remember what your old website theme was called and you want to change it back?

  • I can’t see any history on used themes at the moment – I guess my best bet is to write the theme name down somewhere :)

Hi, I am having the same issues. So after selecting Toujours theme and uploading the photos into the header image- I do not see the option for a slider. Also, I would like those pictures to only show on the first page- not under other tabs. Help please!

  • Hello @alfaseafood,

I see you’re using The Canape theme at the moment. Do you still need help with the Toujours theme or did you find The Canape more useful for you? Let me know, thanks!

    Hi @stefaniamattana

I am new to WordPress and have started using the Twenty Fourteen wordpress template. I’ve been trying to use the slider option but not being able to do so. Could you help? Thanks.

  • Hello @amanmehtatu,

You can set up your Post Slider by going from your Dashboard to Appearance>Customize>Featured Content.
You can choose how to display the sliders (Grid or Slider) as well as pick the tag name which is going to ‘select’ the posts displaying on the slider. The default one is ‘featured’ but you can put any tag you want.

Once you choose the tag, what you have to do is to add that tag on the posts you want to be displayed on the slider.
For example, if your Post Slider tag is ‘featured’, you have to tag the posts with the word ‘feature’, so that the slider can “read” that it has to display that post.
Here’s a quick guide that explains how to add tag to your posts: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/

Hope it’s all clear! If you have any doubts or you get stuck at any step, just let me know and I’ll be glad to help. Thanks!

    @stefmattana

I am using the Twenty Fourteen design as well. I have access to CSS and customization. I am trying to set up a ost/image slider in a page that is NOT my homepage. Is this possible? I am struggling a bit. Thanks!

  • Hello @lindseyashmore1!

I’m afraid that only the front page of your site can feature the Post Slider option, as stated here in the Featured Content and Featured Images section of this page: https://wordpress.com/themes/search/twenty%20four/.

I’m not aware of any CSS customisation to change this, however there might be. I’m tagging this to Staff attention to double check that with them :)
